Boondoggle as a slang term applies to a state of work or activity; It may refer to a meaningless job or position that pays money not justified for valueless results gleaned from the activity; Services or activity performed that have no commercial value. Example: "The state department of human affairs is a boondoggle". The positions granted are particularly given to friends, relatives or to people possibly as payment for favors given to a ruling polititian. Relating to a physical plastic boondoggle product, this term also could describe the result of a mindless activity, one that has a series of repetative motions and the finished product has little use or value. It's only purpose for existance is to show that a person was involved in a project to create it, everyone wants to know what it is used for, and nobody can explain it's use because it has no use; A task of no value given to a person for the sole purpose of assigning a task to consume a persons time. Maybe the name was adopted as a slang term because of what the actual plastic boondoggle represents. Boondoggle making is a task or activity assigned to boy scouts for the sole purpose of keeping them occupied with a quiet project. Weaving a boondoggle for an hour or two at the direction of a scoutmaster keeps the boys quietly occupied perhaps to allow the scoutmaster a break from dealing with rowdy or unruly behavior.Arniewolfe 01:11, 22 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Canadian's use an identical term to refer to 1) the clasp used to shut winter clothing and 2) perhaps based on the tightening of a clasp at the neck, for pointless missmanagement of funds and minor scandals (or scanadals if you will). I heard all of this information (except the word scanadal) from the Canadian dictionary project (I believe it is still some time away from printing). --206.248.149.78 15:59, 22 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have always heard it refer to a "sticky" situation, or else a situation that is not going according to plan or is going bad. Not sure if it's a regional thing or if I've just heard people who don't know what they're talking about. I'm from Michigan if that helps. Mac OS X 19:14, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
