Untitled[edit]

Needed to point out this is an Exam School and students must take ISEE/SSAT in order to get in. "In The News" is not political natural, because every students signed a paper at beginning of each year to promise not to wear inappropriate clothing to school at any time. This should be pointed out in the "In The News"

The school is actually located in Dorchester, not Roxbury. I made the appropriate change.


No, the school is in Roxbury, not Dorchester, and I changed it back. Both Warren st and Humbolt ave are in the heart of Roxbury, and always have been. This area was the heart of Jewish Roxbury in the early 20th century. The border between Roxbury and Dorchester is to the east of Blue Hill ave, many blocks from this building.

I went to Boston Tech in the early 1970s (same building), and they tried to tell us the building was in Dorchester back then too. This was done so that the school wouldn't get a bad reputation for being in a 'bad neighborhood.'

I recommend at look at the old maps of Roxbury and Dorchester on the Boston Public Library web site.

Grades[edit]

BLA logo?[edit]

The infobox would benefit from a logo, but I can't find one anywhere on the school site. If someone uploads one, or simply adds a pointer to it here, I can take care of the details, including writing a Fair Use rationale. Year of name change incorrect[edit]

As a graduate of Girls' Latin School in 1977, my graduating class was the first to graduate with a few boys and thus it was the first year of being renamed Boston Latin Academy. It was incorrectly stated that the name was changed in 1979.

Headmasters[edit]

Dr. John Tetlow 1878-1910

Dr. John Tetlow is largely regarded as the most important headmaster in Girls' Latin School history. A teacher of the classics for the first few years of the school, he was known for his passion for accuracy and his ability to inspire a love of learning. Tetlow was a graduate of Brown University and valedictorian of his class of 1864, was unanimously voted by the School Committee as the new principal of the Girls' Latin School. Born on April 12, 1843 in Providence, Rhode Island, Tetlow married Elizabeth Ingersoll Harrington, daughter of the superintendent of New Bedford public schools in 1870. They had two daughters: Elizabeth born March 31, 1875 and Helen, born February 1, 1877. His wife died six weeks later on March 17, 1877.

On February 12th 1878, Tetlow started the first classes Girls' Latin at the West Newton Street building. He later married Elizabeth P. Howard on July 1, 1880. Daughters, Elizabeth and Helen, would later graduate from GLS class of 1892 and class of 1895 respectively. Their one biological daughter, Frances H., born almost six years later on June 16, 1886, would graduate in 1903.

At the end of the 1910 school year, sixty seven-year old Headmaster Tetlow made the decision to retire; official August 31st.

Tetlow had guided the school beautifully through the difficult first few years of infancy until the school finally won its place. GLS had 760 students, more than twenty times its original size. Tetlow helped to establish the New England Association of Colleges and Preparatory Schools in 1885, served on the Board of Trustees of The Roxbury Latin School and authored several Latin and Greek high school text books.

The GLS Alumnae Association stated "that the school has met with an almost irreparable loss in the resignation of its beloved Headmaster, Dr. John Tetlow, by whose vision, efficiency, determination a high standard of scholarship was established and has been steadily maintained in this institution for the thirty two years of its existence.” On Friday evening June 3rd, Ms Helen A. Stuart, chairman of the Portrait Committee, unveiled the portrait of Tetlow by Mr. Ernest L. Ipsen.

The School Committee voted to grant him honorary title of “Head master Emeritus of Girls’ Latin School”.

On November 25th, 1911, about a year and a half after his retirement, Mr. Tetlow was riding his bike from his home at 139 Davis Avenue in Brookline about a quarter mile over Route 9 to Jamaica Pond. Along Chestnut Street, near Perkins Street which runs along the north border of the Pond, Mr. Tetlow was struck by an automobile driven by Dr. George H. Francis. He was thrown to the ground but did not appear to have life threatening injuries. Dr. Francis drove him home and he went to bed to rest from the bruises he received in the crash. Two weeks later on Saturday, he fell asleep and never regained consciousness. Tetlow had fractured his hip and suffered a subperitoneal hemorrhage. This caused a heart attack. He passed away very unexpectedly on December 9, 1911.

Close Paraphrasing and Possible Copyright issues[edit]

It has been brought up there may be some paraphrasing and copying of sources available at https://web.archive.org/web/20160120102711/http://blagls.org/main/page/history/C26/ in regards to the building descriptions.
