Brad Mays (AKA Bradford Mays) has done extensive work in the American Theatre, most particularly as an experimental artist. There have been numerous print articles and reviews written about this work, but most have yet to be archived onto the internet. His film work is very interesting, and is beginning to attract wide attention. The St. Louis International Film Festival is currently discussing a special screening of his work next February. His first film, "Stage Fright," was a semi-autobiographical film depicting experimental theatre in the late 1960s, and was sponsored by the New York Foundation For The Arts for inclusion in the 1989 Berlin International Film Festival, where it received serious attention. The Baltimore Sun printed two major articles about this, neither of which have been archived on the internet. Similarly, the LA Weekly printed a major article about Mays' explosive and controversial 1997 production of "The Bacchae," but that article has yet to find its way to the internet as well. It seems that 1998 is currently the cut-off point for archiving of theatre-related articles, and LA Weekly has reorganized it's online content with some frequency, making certain reviews and articles difficult to locate.

The Lincoln Center's Museum and Library of Performing Arts, now housed as the Billy Rose Collection at the New York Public Library, has acquired two of May's theatrical productions for their permanent archives. This is an unusual distinction for an experimental artist. Fortunately, this collection's enormous catalog has finally - over the past several weeks - been put online.

Some notes:
1. You can still cite an article as a reference even if it is not online.
2. Also, if you for whatever reason, you can't use the source now, it's okay to just leave it out and fill it in later. This is a fluid project. In the meanwhile, tags such as notability or refimprove will be there. The article won't go away. Also, all the imdb "references", or other "refenences" listed that don't even mention Mays can be removed. You can just put his imdb profile in the an external links section. I suggest clicking on the "American Film Directors" category at the bottom of the article and viewing similar articles. Until more sources are available, it looks better to just have one or two appropriate source(s) than a bunch of ones that seem to be a stretch.

I am attempting to build an overview of the artist's work, citing only productions that will illuminate what he is presently doing. I am assembling print articles and tracking down appropriate online articles as well. Thank you Omarcheeseboro for your guidance and advice. Puffery[edit]

This article seems quite overblown. Judging by the length, detail and number of photos, one would gather that Mays was vastly more influential than he really is. Truth be told, he is an indie filmmaker who has yet to make his mark on the filmmaking landscape. But one would never know this given the exaggerated length, imagery, ciations and general puffery and misrepresentation throughout the article.

For example, the article says Stage Fright showed at the Berlin Film Festival. Well that is not entirely true. The film was not admitted into the Berlin Film Festival competition. Nor was it shown by the festival "out-of-competition". It wasn't at all in the Festival. Here is a list of films that showed in the festival (in- and out-of-competition): http://archiv.berlinale.de/en/archiv/jahresarchive/1989/02_programm_1989/02_Programm_1989.html. That year, the festival showed dozens and dozens of films in many categories -- some up for prizes, other not. But Stage Fright is not among them. To actually be screened at the Berlin Film Festival, your film must be selected by the selection committee. Of course, during the Festival, there are tons of other things happening all around the festival -- including the screenings of films that are not actually in the festival. In this case, Stage Fright screened in something called American Independents, which is an initiative funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Independent Feature Project and others. The initiative shows numerous American indies at festivals around the world, often as side projects or in the film market at the various festivals. Of course, showing a film at a film market or in a side project is a far cry from being in the festival. As great an intiative as A.I. is, its films are in no way a part of the Berlin Film Festival and it would be misrepresentation to say otherwise. This is just one example... Ask123: As per your comments regarding the 1989 Berlin International Film Festival, it turns out that "Stage Fright" IS in point of fact listed in the official 180 page pamphlet distributed at the festival, the "European Film Market 1989." Listed as "Stagefright" the film is cataloged between "The Suitors," directed by Ghasem Ebrahimian and "Street Story" directed by Joseph B. Vasquez. "Stage Fright" is given full treatment in the pamphlet, and two in-house festival screenings are listed, for Friday 17.2 at Studio 2, and Saturday 18.2, in Studio 1. As a film sponsored by the American Independents In Berlin, "Stage Fright" was shown as an integral part of the festival, though not as a competing title/official selection. I also found an article stating that all the American Indies with films in the festival (both competing and market, including "Stage Fright") were honored at the Gothe House in NYC, all the directors were given opportunities to speak with the pressregarding their work.
