Untitled

The line about the gun shot scene being used in the movie is not true, just a urban myth. So I changed the text to reflect this. http://www.snopes.com/movies/actors/brandlee.htm

This biography is pretty limited - could someone add more detail? Mmartins

I remember years ago (probably just after his death), a segment appeared on Unsolved Mysteries. But they said (and I've read in several sources) that the fatal shooting did not occur while cameras rolled, but while Brandon and a couple other folks were playing around with the gun. Who wrote the 'Death' section?

Srsly that was some epic read lol. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.179.198.189 (talk) 04:41, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

Where did Brandon learn to fight?

Does Brandon Lee have any formal martial arts training, or is he merely the product of stage performance? I was hoping to find more information regarding this in the ariticle.

He was trained in Jeet Kune Do. He began to train with his father ever since he could walk and furthered his training through friend Danny Inosanto.

He started training with his father at age 3 in 1968 until age 8 in 1973. He was considered a brown belt in skills at the time of his fathers death. He received his black belt while working with his fathers student Dan Inosanto. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.253.155.86 (talk) 05:49, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

matrix

does anyone have any sources for this, because it seems very unlikely to me... -Xornok 01:07, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

Just another fabricated rumour, there's nothing to back this up anywhere on official sites. DerangedKitten 08:51, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

I have read this in one of the books I have on Bruce Lee. I will try to find a reference to it. I remember reading that it was true, we was slated to play Neo. Chexmix53 (talk) 20:10, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

It is true. Brandon Lee was the first choice of the wachowski brothers to play Neo in the Matrix and this should be included. I wish I knew how to edit I would add it in. Allanana79 (talk) 03:32, 24 March 2016 (UTC)

Box office Smash / modest box office hit

Kill Bill?? No no no, thats the crow.

most every movie i've seen since 1994 has referenced (or plain replicated) David Schow's "The Crow". Comics often carry these same motifs, but In the part that discribes his death, there is written that The Crow was "a box office smash", however, on the page about The Crow (film) it says the film was "a modest box office hit". How about some figures to show how much it grossed?

A couple of things;

Theres a grammatical error where the Kung Fu quotation is introduced "Herbie Pilato, in his 1993 book Herbie Pilato, in his 1993 book The Kung Fu Book of Caine: The Complete Guide to TV's First Mystical Eastern Western, commented on the casting of the original Kung Fu series:" In his book, in his book...

Secondly, is there really any point to this huge quote which ostensibly has absolutely no relevance to Brandon Lee? It doesn't even mention him.

I agree. It doesn't even mention Brandon, rather a character that was associated with the series. I think that needs to be edited down to parts that are appropriate to Brandon's role.

- I agree with the other person. I worried where the links went, and find what wikipedia says on links not matching what you have done. These links should be listed. There are other celebrities sites on wikipedia that have extenal links that would be called fan sites and are factual, and since when is IMDB and an autographs page(which is run by a fan) unbias? That information is itself written like wikipedia by fans.

I've just removed excessive linkspam in External links section (WP:NOT, WP:EL). The Open Directory Project link should cover fansites. - Belovedfreak 15:39, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

Removed links again since Wikipedia is not a mirror or a repository of links, images, or media files. WP:EL is quite helpful about what external links to include in an article. - Belovedfreak 18:37, 6 February 2007 (UTC)
The links are not spam, nor it is excessive. There are Brandon Lee sites. The directory you listed is outdated and does not cover most fan sites. Two of the three links you claim are directories are not, and therefore need to be removed. According to wikipedia rules none of them meet the requirement for spam, and their rule for links are: Such pages could contain further research which is accurate and on-topic". Several of these websites are good sources for factual information and research, and should be included in links. - updated 6th February 2007 —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 220.239.188.248 (talkcontribs) 19:29, 6 February 2007.
Links normally to be avoided:
"Any site that misleads the reader by use of factually inaccurate material or unverifiable research" - fansites are filled with unverified information. If it's verifiable, then include it in the article.
"Avoid undue weight on particular points of view" - fansites by their very nature have a biased point of view.
Links to be considered: "A web directory category, when deemed appropriate by those contributing to the article, with preference to open directories." - ie. Open Directory Project. It's a compromise that lets people find fansites if they want. Otherwise, they can easily use google.
Again, Wikipedia is not a mirror or a repository of links, images, or media files. "On articles about topics with many fansites, including a link to one major fansite may be appropriate, marking the link as such."
Basically, if the information is relevant, interesting and verifiable, include it in the article. -Belovedfreak 20:51, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

Bruce Lee Foundation link should be removed. Irrelevant to Brandon. Brandon Lee is not Bruce Lee. VeriteAca (talk) 13:16, 4 April 2020 (UTC)

I had the same comment/question in the Shannon Lee article. Linda's bio says Sweded and English. Yet both Shannon and Brandon don't list English in their bio's. Should they be added. Will wait a while for comments etc before thinking of adding. --Xiahou 02:22, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

Death section

I think it really needs to have references cited and I have also separated it into two sections one with the death details and the other for the aftermath of his death. Shakirfan 11:04, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

it also needs to state what film it was, that his death happened during. i know it's the crow, and most people will know this, but i came to this page today, clicked the death link in the contents box, was taking down to the death section and i began reading. there was nothing stating what film... the death section carries on from the section above, which finishes with info about the crow. you can't assume people will read the whole page in one go, i for one, never, and was left a bit confused. the film needs to be stated. each section should be a section on its own, not a follow on from the section above, otherwise there's no point in the contents box. 194.221.133.226 (talk) 10:01, 23 January 2008 (UTC)
I remember reading a while ago that Brandon actually got shot in Wilmington, NC where they were shooting The Crow but he was taken to (and died at) Onslow Memorial Hospital, which is about 45 minutes away in Jacksonville, NC. Once again, I have read so many different things on Bruce and Brandon, off the top of my head, I can not think of the reference for this. I remember being taken to that hospital when I lived in Jacksonville, and doped up on medicine, I asked why they didn't have a plaque or something mentioning this notable death.  :) Does anyone know of this? Chexmix53 (talk) 20:16, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
Also., i never believe it was an accident., it may fool alot of poeple, but not me. Brandon was murdered! Some poeple try to stop him from getting stardom, jealousy! If the death of Princess Diana was a cover of the Royal of England, Brandon's death is the cover up of the US goverment! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 60.50.194.87 (talk) 15:05, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
so many such 'accidents' occur...they probably wanted to make the legend of this family...I do not think that Bruce Lee died of unknown reason, the reason is known he was destined to become a legend, so and must to die while filming...the same was done with Michel Jackson...it's just a business. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.219.188.76 (talk) 20:04, 13 December 2010 (UTC)

Not the U.S. gouvernment killed him, i think it was the "Sun Yee On" Triade. They also killed the manager of Jet Li in 1993. And Betty Ting-Pei was married to Charles Heung, who is suspected to be the head of this Triade. Read about this in your english wikipedia. Way better than the german one. Greatings from Germany.--ClaptonDennis (talk) 15:11, 20 April 2010 (UTC) (Clapton Dennis)

That's fairly ridiculous. However, one of the actors from the movie said during a phone interview that police had corrected their assessment that Lee had been shot by a .44 pistol round, and had been instead shot by a .44 rifle round. It's feasible that one of the things that led to the bullet being lodged in the barrel was the use of a longer heavier bullet being improperly reloaded into a pistol casing. The actor hinted that Lee was shot with a rifle, not a pistol, but I can find no evidence to support this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by LancerMKVII (talkcontribs) 07:48, 18 October 2009 (UTC)

Culpable homicide?

I think that the man that killed Brandon Lee wasn't Michael Massee, but the individual that forgot to check the firearm's barrel. This individual commited "culpable homicide" by negligence. Why his name never appears? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 200.96.234.173 (talk) 14:08, 25 June 2015 (UTC)

Bio needs re-writing

The bio needs a lot of work. A) The beginning says that Brandon returned to LA in 1985 but does not state from where -no background is provided for his childhood. I live in Seattle and happen to know he lived here, but most people don't. The writer should not assume this is common knowledge. B) The bio then goes into a tangent about Bruce Lee not being casted for the original Kung Fu series, which doesn't tie very well with Brandon's bio (it's meant to reference Brandon's consideration for the role in the latter version of the show but takes too much space in the bio for something that never came to fruition). C) Brandon's martial arts training gets no mention whatsoever.

I have a lot going at the moment but will research and expand his bio info, if someone else doesn't.

Cheers!

Swedish name

An editor who wanted to remove Lee's Chinese name pointed out, perhaps in a tongue-in-cheek manner, that if we include Lee's Chinese name at the English-language Wikipedia, we ought also to include his Swedish name. It is not clear, however, that he has a "Swedish name," or that his parents assigned him one as they did his Chinese name. It is not common for Swedish Americans to give their children alternate Swedish names the way the Chinese American overseas Chinese community generally does. According to the Swedish Wikipedia, his Swedish name is Brandon Lee--the same as his English name. Badagnani (talk) 18:30, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

References!

This article is written almost entirely without the use of references. Can the original author or someone else please reference this work? I know that most of this article is factually correct (some things I just never heard and I can't back up), but this isn't even good enough for a term paper, let alone an encyclopedia article, without references!

Also, it does no good to talk on the discussion page or ask questions if you don't sign your posts.

If this article isn't referenced, should it just be re-written with sourced facts? Please advise! Chexmix53 (talk) 20:20, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

Yes, I think it would be fine to re-write it with sourced info. Carl.bunderson (talk) 04:57, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

He died in 1993 but was in a movie in 1994? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.113.97.253 (talk) 10:00, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

Lots of actors have died during production of a movie or post production and they still release the movie. He died in 93 but the movie didn't come out until 94. That doesn't mean the date of death is wrong.Chexmix53 (talk) 01:15, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

Prefixing Brandon's American nationality with "Chinese-"

An anonymous user insists on prefixing Brandon's nationality "American" with "Chinese-". Here's why describing Brandon as "American" is the best way to go:

1. Brandon was more White than Chinese. His mother was fully White and his father, Bruce Lee, was 1/8 White, making Brandon 9/16 White and 7/16 Chinese. He better fits the description of White American than Chinese American. More to the point, Brandon was also a Swedish American, an English American, and a German American. To classify him as solely a Chinese American is akin to denying him European roots, which borders on racism.

2. Wikipedia:Manual of Style (biographies) states that "Ethnicity should generally not be emphasized in the opening unless it is relevant to the subject's notability." The pages of Keanu Reeves, Dean Cain, Russell Wong, and Rob Schneider, all of whom are Americans with partial Asian ancestry and arguably higher profile than Brandon, all list these actors as simply "American". Brandon Lee is no different in this regard. 218.102.186.10 (talk) 17:58, 6 July 2009 (UTC)

Do not make comparison with Keanu Reeves, Dean Cain, Russell Wong, and Rob Schneider. They were in different cases.
Ancestry, mainly inherited from father's ancestral root, which is what you inherit your father's last name.
His ethnicity was definitely relevant to the subject's notability.
Asian Americans or European Americans were also US citizens. PS6789 (talk) 15:41, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
That makes no sense. The manual of style is not open for such interpretation. Brandon Lee was born, raised and lived most of his life in America, hence referred to as an American. Erzsébet Báthory(talk|contr.) 16:56, 17 September 2009 (UTC)

Most of the Asian Americans or European Americans were also raised and lived most of their life in US, and still referred to Asian Americans or European Americans. PS6789 (talk) 11:27, 18 September 2009 (UTC)

Also see Linda Lee Cadwell, her ethnicity was mentioned in the opening sentences. It should be apply to Brandon and Shannon. PS6789 (talk) 15:43, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

Brandon was really just Eurasian. That would be the correct term to his ethnicity. MadisonGold (talk) 20:13, 28 March 2013 (UTC)

Wording in Filmography Section

The filmography section (final section before sources) says that Lee was 'killed during filming' of the crow. Perhaps 'died whilst filming' would be more appropriate? Killed carries certain... connotations. If no one objects I'll make the change. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 60.224.172.131 (talk) 11:46, 27 February 2011 (UTC)

Objectiveness

The Death section needs a major rewrite. It is not objective in the least, calling people idiots and saying that time will never fix this greatest of tragedies.--184.56.245.182 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 02:39, 25 April 2012 (UTC).

All of that stuff was just added on April 24 by a new user. It probably ought to be deleted for POV and complete lack of citations, but I haven't got the time to deal with fighting the contributor over it. 208.64.203.11 (talk) 01:49, 27 April 2012 (UTC)
The death section is so bad I think it might need a complete re-write. I came to read about his death and I get something that reads like the written statement in a wrongful death case by the plaintiff. It's not written encyclopedic at all. Oy. Dancindazed (talk) 19:29, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
Okay, I took the time to delete much of and rewrite the death section. I deleted much of the ranting that was taking place about all the specificity on the cartridges primer, who should have done what. It read as an upset fan, or family member, and not encyclopedic. More details on his death can be added, but should be sourced and be important. It shouldn't turn into a 5-paragraph indictment of the film crew disguised as a Wikipedia section. In addition to not citing any sources, it was very opinionated and non-linear in nature. Also, just because you start a sentence with "it is rumored that", or "all though it may never be known for sure", or "some are of the opinion that" that doesn't mean it's okay to write opinions and speculation in the article. Also even some of the most commonly known details I left in still need citations, if anyone can help with that. Thanks, Dancindazed (talk) 20:29, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

Where did the bullet enter Brandon's body? 121.216.65.86 (talk) 15:24, 25 August 2012 (UTC)

The bullet entered his abdomen and was lodged against his spine. Had he lived, he would have been paralyzed from the waist down. MadisonGold (talk) 20:15, 28 March 2013 (UTC)

Is "Lei5 Gwok3 Hou4" the Pinyin name of Brandon Lee?

Is Lei5 Gwok3 Hou4 the Pinyin name of Brandon Lee and not Lei Gwok Hou? Seems odd to have english numbers in a chinese name. Based on the history of the page, I have checked that this alleged "Pinyin" name of Lee is dated back from July 2009, and no one seem to question it or changed it. --AR E N Z O Y 1 6At a l k 17:45, 19 July 2013 (UTC)

Accidental Death Scene of Brandon Lee

I read the article after reading about Bruce Lee and cannot help to ask just one question. On a movie where props are always available, how would any live bullet come into a place where there are only props. The article told how it happened but not why. Curious.{{{}}}

Well, that's pretty simple: there was no live bullet. 24.14.224.157 (talk) 17:58, 19 December 2016 (UTC)

Brandon Lee's Death Scene

Brandon Lee's actual death scene is not in the The Crow and never has been.

According to the IMDB (Internet Movie Database): "Brandon Lee died during a mishap on the set. A scene required a gun to be loaded, cocked, and then pointed at the camera. Because of the close-range of the shot, the dummy cartridges loaded had real brass caps, bullet, but no powder. After the cut, the props master (not the arms master - he had left the set for the day) dry-fired the gun to get the cock off, knocking the projectile/bullet into the barrel of the gun. The next scene to be filmed involving that gun was the rape of Shelly. The gun was loaded with blanks (which usually contain double or triple the powder of a normal cartridge to make a loud noise). Lee entered the set carrying a bag of groceries containing an explosive blood pack. The script called for Funboy (Michael Massee) to shoot Eric Draven (Lee) as he entered the room, triggering the blood pack. The bullet that was stuck in the barrel was blasted at Lee through the bag he was carrying, killing him. The footage of his death was subsequently developed and used as evidence in the investigation into his death. As part of the lawsuit settlement, the footage was later destroyed." [1]1.178.18.70 (talk) 23:49, 22 November 2013 (UTC)

The article doesn't appear to state that death scene is in the movie. However I have added a sentence about the footage being used for evidence and them being destroyed. Mitch Ames (talk) 06:55, 23 November 2013 (UTC)

Unverified Information

I will keep a record of this in this thread. None of this information is defamatory or a an embellishment of his character. I think it's fine here until I will either delete when proven false or return it to the article.

1. This was written in the begining of his career: Lee returned to Los Angeles in 1985, where he worked for Ruddy Morgan Productions as a script reader, doing an uncredited cameo in the action film Crime Killer (1985) starring George Pan Andreas.

Note: There is no article citing the specific company nor the film. A VHS of the film was ripped on YouTube, feel free to have a go. YouTube generally speaking is an invalid citation, and the VHS would be invalid until a credible source spots him and points it out. The current citation mentions a company where he worked as a script written but not a specific one. Would be fun if those could be verified somehow.

2. was part of the American New Theatre group founded by his friend John Lee Hancock

Note: As of now, with the citation I found, Lee performed in a play written by Hancock but a friendship isn't noted. Also I see a Theatre group in this citation but with a different name.

3.On Ohara episode: He played a villainous character named Kenji. This was Lee's first and only guest appearance in a television series and also the only time he played a villain. [citation needed] (resolved)

Note: No article or acceptable citation is available: the episode can be seen on YouTube.

4.in a plot that Linda Lee Cadwell had originally reserved for herself. A private funeral took place in Seattle on April 3, 1993. Only close family and friends were permitted to attend, including Lee's immediate family as well as fiancée Eliza Hutton's parents and younger sister, who flew in from Missouri

Note: I can't find this info

5. At the time of Lee's death, Hutton was working as a casting assistant and was on set of The Crow so much that she was later credited with being Lee's on-set assistant. After his death, Hutton petitioned to have gun safety regulations tightened on film sets. The Crow is dedicated to the couple.

6. In 1990, Lee met Eliza "Lisa" Hutton at director Renny Harlin's office, located at the headquarters of 20th Century Fox. Hutton was working as a personal assistant to Harlin, and later became a story editor for Stillwater Productions, in 1991. Lee and Hutton moved in together in early 1991 and became engaged in October 1992. Brandon and Eliza planned to start a family immediately after they were married, but they had yet to conceive when he died.

7. Brandon Lee was trained in Wing Chun, and Shaolin Kung-Fu.

12. Lee's body was flown to nearby Jacksonville, where an autopsy was performed.Filmman3000 (talk) 18:23, 12 September 2020 (UTC)

13. A previous scene using the same gun had called for inert dummy cartridges (with no powder or primer) to be loaded in the revolver for a close-up scene: dummy cartridges provide the realistic appearance of actual rounds for film scenes that do not require the gun to be fired and use a revolver where the bullets are visible from the front. Instead of purchasing commercial dummy cartridges, the film's prop crew created their own by pulling the bullets from live rounds, dumping the powder charge and then reinserting the bullets. However, they left the live primer in place at the rear of the cartridge. At some point during filming, the revolver was apparently discharged with one of these improperly deactivated cartridges in the chamber, setting off the primer with enough force to drive the bullet partway into the barrel, where it became stuck (a condition known as a squib load). The prop crew either failed to notice this or failed to recognize the significance of this issue.Filmman3000 (talk) 04:45, 13 September 2020 (UTC)

18.Lee's gravestone, designed by local sculptor Kirk McLean, is a tribute to Lee and Hutton. The epitaph reads, 'For Brandon and Eliza, ever joined in true love's beauty.' It is composed of two twisting rectangles of charcoal granite which join at the bottom and pull apart near the top. "It represents Eliza and Brandon, the two of them, and how the tragedy of his death separated their mortal life together", said his mother, who described her son, like his father before him, as a poetic, romantic person.Filmman3000 (talk) 04:30, 10 August 2021 (UTC)

Third paragraph of intro

An IP address keeps deleting the content of the third paragraph intro.

From this

On March 31, 1993, only a few days away from completing the film, Lee was accidentally killed after being shot on the set by a prop gun. Later, production resumed with the blessing of Lee's family. With very few scenes to film, The Crow was completed by re-writing the script, using early CGI technology and stunt doubles. It is generally well-reviewed and known to demonstrate Lee's dramatic abilities. It was a commercial success and is now considered a cult classic. Many saw parallels between Lee and his father comparing their careers as action film leading men who died young, prior to the release of their breakthrough film.

To this

In 1992, he landed his most notable role as Eric Draven in Alex Proyas's The Crow (1994), based on the comic book of the same name, which would be his final film.

Sadly Lee's short life, mixed with the impact of the last film are the most important aspect of his life. If one thinks the prose installed is problematic, please re-write it in a way that is a good interpretation of it.Filmman3000 (talk) 19:41, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

They delete only the references to Lee's fiancee (and are spamming his page). I have noticed they post lies and fake information about his personal life constantly and then just keep doing it. Can you block via IP? They appear to be the same as user Gabrielle Lyss. Their antics are just immature. Eliza Hutton was his partner and all the information has been LONG verified. --VeriteAca (talk) 14:56, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

I agree it's gross. Some folks also did some vandalism that I find inappropriate beyond belief.Filmman3000 (talk) 18:06, 12 September 2020 (UTC)

Mortal Kombat, The Matrix, and plays

1. There was talk to cast Brandon Lee in the role of Johnny Cage in the film adaptation Mortal Kombat, most of the news outlet that mentions it bloat the whole story. Recently on YouTube video, the director confirms he was briefly considered doesn't think any formal offers were made. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-pSc-hAWdM

2. There is a rumor that Brandon Lee was to be cast in The Matrix. I think I remember, the directors denying it, but I can't find the interview where they deny it.

3. In this Youtube video, Lee confirms he was in the American Theater troupe, and later was in a troupe called Legal Aliens. He also acted in the play The Importance of being Earnest. At 4:21 minutes Lee covers this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2jrY82_gcE

I suggest not publishing anything on these matters until a reliable source covers it.Filmman3000 (talk) 00:06, 19 October 2020 (UTC)

Just found an article from a website I am unfamiliar with that says that John Lee Hancock founded the troupe Legal Aliens. https://www.enprimeur.ca/directorBio/english/the-founder/117622

And another one that says they co-founded it together. https://www.culture.com/people/001/585/john-lee-hancock/

This information needs to be verified.Filmman3000 (talk) 00:16, 19 October 2020 (UTC)
