The page is not accurate. He began learning Wing chun at age 13 not "age 16, in 1957" which is actually impossible because he was born in 1940. He began learning Wing chun at age 13 in 1953 when William Chueng took Lee to the Restaurant Workers Union Hall, and introduced him to Yip Man.

"Cheung did not believe that Lee would be a serious student. Lee persisted, and with some reluctance on an autumn day in 1953, Cheung took Bruce Lee to the Restaurant Workers’ Union Hall, where classes were held, and introduced him to the Grandmaster of Wing Chun kung fu, Professor Yip Man."

“I thought he was just learning kung fu because everybody was doing it. I still didn’t take Bruce very seriously. Then, shortly after we moved the school to a bigger facility in Kowloon, we started hearing complaints about Bruce beating up his seniors, as well as other people who were training with him. They became very upset because he was progressing so fast. He practiced every minute of the day. Even while talking, he was always doing some kind of arm or leg movement. That’s when I realized that Bruce was actually serious about Wing Chun.”

Contradicting information in Wing Chun section

In the Wing Chun section the following sentences contradict each other.

"Lee began training in Wing Chun when he was 16 years old under the Wing Chun teacher Yip Man in 1957, after losing several fights with rival gang members."

"However, Lee showed a keen interest in Wing Chun, and continued to train privately with Yip Man and Wong Shun Leung in 1955."

If he began training in 1957 he could not have continued training in 1955.

Bruce Lee is english descent

If his parent were citizens of Hong Kong before it was returned to China in 1997 then Lee would have been a British citizen by birth. As also is Jackie Chan. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.149.173.13 (talk) 14:34, 3 February 2017 (UTC)

Philosophically suicidal

He and his son died by their dangerous job. Eclecticism is to select what you LIKE the best, but is not connected causally, never in his books was he deeply causal, but emotional, because what we like IS emotional. Mistake which happens two times isn't a mistake. His philosophy isn't functional. Also as a pure eclectic philosopher caused his followers not to accept philosophical debate, simply to LOVE him as God, even if he was anti-metaphysical. Philosophy isn't about what we LIKE and LOVE, that's lust. Physical risk and early death, isn't statistically functional. His risks didn't improve philosophy. Early death cannot make you savvy, especially when there is no god as he claimed. People need to be alive in order they learn. He didn't die because of an external factor. He killed himself and his son, because his "put in what you like" uncausal philosophy, lead to statistically high risk of mortal physical damage. Also that risk was ALSO accumulative not only a binary risk between life and death. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:587:4104:7800:756D:3D0C:F4DC:4F05 (talk) 13:38, 22 December 2016 (UTC)

"actor, film director, martial artist, philosopher[4] and founder of the martial art Jeet Kune Do". That s true. But if it calls "actor, film director", it should in my opinion also call "martial artist, martial arts instructor" because he was all of it. He was actor and film director, but also martial artist and martial arts instructor. I would like to add it (if not wished just delet it again). "Lee held dual nationality in Hong Kong and the US"

Something is bogus about this article, because at that time dual nationality was not allowed under U.S. law. He was born in the USA and had a U.S. passport, so obviously he was a U.S. citizen and COULD NOT be any other.Starhistory22 (talk) 00:56, 20 August 2017 (UTC)

@Starhistory22: Your reliable source to support all this is ? - FlightTime (open channel) 01:41, 20 August 2017 (UTC)

@Starhistory22 Actually, he could have had dual citizenship for the simply reason that the US INS does not check if you renounced your former citizenship. All Bruce Lee had to do was keep his old Hong Kong passport and not inform the (British) colonial government that he is no longer a Hong Kong citizen. As long as he presented his US passport when dealing with US bureaucrats and Hong Kong passport with Hong Kong bureaucrats, neither government would ever know. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.230.237.47 (talk) 07:58, 21 August 2017 (UTC)

Why no mention of Bruce's Hayward, CA, club?

I've read that since the Oakland location was not financially successful, they started training in James' garage. When did they open (and close?) the Hayward location? https://localwiki.org/oakland/Bruce_Lee Or was that something James and Novak did on their own, without Bruce's involvement? Phantom in ca (talk) 19:19, 25 September 2017 (UTC)

Were Taky and James certified to teach JKD or not?

In the 2nd table under "Martial arts lineage" it says "Certified by Bruce Lee as instructors of Jeet Kune Do" and then list Taky, James and Dan. Yet earlier in "Legacy" under "Certified Instructors" it says that Dan was certified to be an instructor in JKD (3rd rank), but that Taky was a 5th rank in Jun Fan Gung Fu and James was a 3rd rank (instructor) in Jun Fan Gung Fu. Neither section has footnote/s supporting those assertions. Were Taky and/or James certified to teach JKD or only Jun Fan Gung Fu? Phantom in ca (talk) 22:26, 25 September 2017 (UTC)

Conflicting dates for JKD

This article, under "Martial Arts Career" and "Jeet Kune Do" says, "Jeet Kune Do originated in 1967." But in the opening paragraph of the Wiki "Jeet Kune Do" article, it says "Lee, who founded the system on July 9, 1969...." Neither statement has a footnote supporting it. My guess is that 1967 is when it was conceived and 1969 July 09 is when it was named JKD. But that is just a guess. Phantom in ca (talk) 02:10, 26 September 2017 (UTC)

"Bruce Lee's Tao of Chinese Gung Fu"?

Under Legacy, "Certified Instructors" it says "Bruce Lee personally certified only three instructors: Taky Kimura, James Yimm Lee, and Dan Inosanto. Inosanto holds the 3rd rank (Instructor) directly from Bruce Lee in Jeet Kune Do, Jun Fan Gung Fu, and Bruce Lee's Tao of Chinese Gung Fu. Taky Kimura holds a 5th rank in Jun Fan Gung Fu. James Yimm Lee held a 3rd rank in Jun Fan Gung Fu. Ted Wong holds 2nd rank in Jeet Kune Do certified directly by Bruce Lee...." (emphasis added)

Under "Martial Arts Career" there are subsections titled "Jun Fan Gung Fu" and later "Jeet Kune Do" but there is no mention of "Bruce Lee's Tao of Chinese Gung Fu."

What was/is "Bruce Lee's Tao of Chinese Gung Fu"? When did Bruce teach/practice it? What distinguishes it from "Jun Fan Gung Fu" and "Jeet Kune Do"? Since it was worthy of its own teaching certificate, shouldn't it be mentioned in the "Martial Arts Career" section? Phantom in ca (talk) 19:06, 25 September 2017 (UTC)

Hmm Abdul Rehman7861 (talk) 10:06, 9 December 2017 (UTC)

As I understand it, the Tao of Chinese Gung Fu was a continuation of Bruce's development in the martial arts from Wing Chun/Jun Fan Gung Fu. There were three categories to Bruce's developments: Jun Fan Gung Fu, an extension from Wing Chun, taught in the schools and had a structured curriculum. Tao of Chinese Gung Fu was taught to private students and was a middle step between JFGF and JKD. Jeet Kune Do was the final development Bruce was able develop, only taught to private students.173.13.121.209 (talk) 16:01, 3 March 2018 (UTC)

In the article, it says under Certified Instructors: " Inosanto holds the 3rd rank (Instructor) directly from Bruce Lee in Jeet Kune Do, Jun Fan Gung Fu, and Bruce Lee's Tao of Chinese Gung Fu." In the Martial Art World 1990s interview of Inosanto by Rick Tucci, Dan says he had those certifications, in "three separate arts," by the time the LA school opened in Feb 1967. See ~1 min 35 sec in of Part 1 of 4 at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JbQwbZDeb8

IIRC, Steve McQueen had earned a Level 1 in "The Tao of Chinese Gung Fu."

Given that, I think the main article, which talks about Jun Fan Gung Fu and JKD in the Martial Arts Career section, should also describe "The Tao of Chinese Gung Fu" (at minimum what makes it a distinct art from the other two). Phantom in ca (talk) 21:05, 16 August 2019 (UTC)

Pallbearers

At Lee's funeral it is often said that actors Chuck Norris and George Lazenby were part of his pallbearers. According to the citation, pallbearers at Lee's funeral on July 25, 1973, included Taky Kimura, Steve McQueen, James Coburn, Dan Inosanto, Peter Chin, and Lee's brother Robert.

Norris and Lazenby are seen in photos of Lee's funeral and were present, but not in the pallbearer photo. I would gladly keep their name here as attendees, if a proper citations shows up.Filmman3000 (talk) 00:43, 8 November 2019 (UTC)

Please be clear on Bruce's identity. If the Bio portion. It states that Bruce was "Chinese" when in fact he was American by birth. Although her was indeed raised in Asia until turning 18, he lived in Hong Kong which was a British colony until 1997. Therefore, I suggest that editors clarify to readers accurately by explaining that Bruce was indeed American and Hong Kongese aka Hong Kong resident under British occupation. He was NEVER officially a Chinese citizen or resident even when living in Hong Kong. IF editors would like to include Bruce's Chinese identity, that is fine, however please clarify that although his families ancestral linage goes back to China similar to how my lineage goes back to Ireland, like me Bruce was American. He did appeal to Chinese philosophies such as Taoism for example. But I am a Taoist too and that doesn't make me Chinese. Please consider these nuances.

Include World Champion martial artist Conor McGregor in the listed individuals prefaced by “Numerous sports and entertainment figures have cited Lee as an inspiration,” in the Legacy tab. Conor McGregor has made several statements about the influence Bruce Lee had/has on his life in fighting and philosophy. The relation between Conor McGregor and Bruce Lee’s credible attributes in martial arts, social impact, and preeminence is notable at least. Along with the probability that Conor has mentioned Bruce Lee as a source of inspiration and respect....more so than any other athlete of all time....and has accomplished the unparalleled success with that influence...speaks to the legacy of Bruce.

Jeet Kune Do

At one point the article states that Jeet Kune Do originated in 1967, but when discussing his demonstrations at the Longbeach Karate Tournament it states he showcase JKD in 64 and 67. So when did JKD started to develop? Some sources state he began to develop it after the Wong Jack Man fight. Can somebody clarify? Also from what I've heard he closed down his schools when he left for Hong Kong (1971?) but allowed Dan Inosanto and others to continue teaching. If that is the case, did he leave anything behind (other than his movies) e.g. notes, videos, lessons attesting how he further developed JKD between 1971 and 1973? In other words, does anybody know what Bruce Lee incorporated in his arsenal? 2001:BB6:78A5:C600:7D91:889F:9B2:1A6A (talk) 22:46, 13 August 2021 (UTC)

At 1964 Longbeach (before Jackman encounter), Lee demos Jun Fan Gung Fu, which was his systemized martial art from 1962. It was this systemized martial art's flaws that made Bruce Lee create the "philosphy of Jeet Kune Do". Lee defacto outlined the concept of Jeet Kune Do in 1965 and dejure demonstrated it to public in 1967.[1][2] |source=}} And JKD techniques didn't "develop" since it's inception, it's a philosophy - Lee absorbed what he deemed was useful and rejected what was useless and hoped to use JKD as mentality to encourage others to do the same, not to just follow the creed of singular martial art. What his senior students teach are their takes/their systems based on Lee's technique and teachings - like Inosanto teaches his own "JKD Concepts" system and Kimura tried to preserve Jun Fan Gung Fu at it's original form pre-JKD.
