Change to the Controversy Section

[edit]

I think the last sentence of the paragraph "...where he was also revealed to be transphobic." should be changed to "...where he was also perceived to be transphobic." Seems less polemic and more true to the source. I made the change. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 100.16.130.70 (talk) 03:48, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

When we say he was perceived to be transphobic in the email chain, I think that wording is a little unclear. The source doesn't say the email was perceived as transphobic; the one specific allegation of transphobia stemmed from a cartoon he posted, which didn't have anything to do with the email chain except that someone brought up that cartoon in their email reply to him. The perception of transphobia came from the posting of the cartoon, not the email. If we are going to talk about transphobia, could we be clear that in the email chain, two doctoral candidates said that he had engaged in transphobic behavior in the past?
I'm noticing that this incident is at least starting to be picked up by reliable sources outside of Duke, but I think we should still be careful that our coverage doesn't grow out of proportion to the amount of coverage the incident received in reiable sources.
