League Stats!!

[edit]

To whoever keeps updating the manager stats - as with all football stats on Wikipedia, it should include LEAGUE STATS ONLY!!. 90.204.201.38 (talk) 11:37, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect. The WPFOOTY project has agreed that the infobox (top-right of an article) should be for domestic league stats only. However other statistics sections may not necessarily be so. The important thing is to be clear in the definition of the stats, so an explanatory note above the Manager stats table would be useful here I feel. --Jameboy (talk) 12:29, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough, I agree, but you've got to be 100% certain that all his manager stats are for all competitions then, as I'm not sure they are. 90.204.201.38 (talk) 17:52, 14 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
His league stats are sourced to soccerbase, which generally includes all competitions. Though it's not always 100pc accurate. Peanut4 (talk) 18:21, 14 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Place of birth

[edit]

In Robson's autobiography, there is a section by his mother Maureen, stating that he was born in his grandmother's house in Chester-le-Street. The family home was in Witton Gilbert and he grew up there. Surely you can't get a much more reliable source for a place of birth than the person giving birth! I will amend (and cite) accordingly. --Jameboy 19:19, 9 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

United captaincy

[edit]

I've changed the info box that said he took over the Utd captaincy from Ray Wilkins. Ray Wilkins was never club captain. Robson took over from Sammy McIlroy. Wilkins did captain the club on occasions, much like Schmeichel did but, like Schmeichel he was never club captain.

Firstly apologies for saying that you hadn't discussed this change, when clearly you had explained your reasons - although why you put it in the middle of the talk page (hence I missed it), I'm not sure. Anyway, Robson's autobiography (p63) has the following:
"Ray suffered a depressed fracture of the cheekbone in our match at Bournemouth, which put him out of action for several weeks, and in his absence I took over as skipper for United and England. When Ray returned, I retained both jobs and he became my vice-captain."
He makes no distinction between club captain and team captain - if you have a source for a list of club captains, please share any info you have. Robson also suggests that Wilkins succeeded Martin Buchan (not McIlroy) but I'm dubious about that. All very confusing - we definitely need some United-based sources to sort this out I think. --Jameboy (talk) 11:06, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In the Manchester United F.C. article, there is a table of the club's captains. Granted, the table was original research on my part, but I could not find a definitive list of club captains on the web, only a list of people who had captained the team at some point in the last 50 years. Nevertheless, what I found was that Martin Buchan took the captaincy from Bobby Charlton in 1973, before Sammy McIlroy took over in 1979. McIlroy held the captaincy for three years until 1982, when Bryan Robson took over. Robson was captain for a United record of 12 years, the final three years (1991-94) being served as co-captain along with Steve Bruce. – PeeJay 13:43, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There's plenty of books on United so there must be a definitive list out there somewhere. But I'll keep looking, anyway. --Jameboy (talk) 14:03, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've found a source (at manutd.com no less) that says Robson succeeded Wilkins as club captain. --Jameboy (talk) 14:09, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ambassador role

[edit]

http://football.guardian.co.uk/News_Story/0,,2264105,00.html

Probably not worth adding to the article until it's all finalised. I assume that as an ambassador he will be expected to host lavish parties and hand out Ferrero Rocher. --Jameboy (talk) 22:40, 14 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Update - now confirmed. Have added it into the article. --Jameboy (talk) 16:17, 24 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Personal Life

[edit]

I removed the bit about him owning a pub and sating that he had acquired 50% of the pub because he had refurbished it inside and out. He may own half of a pub but that's not really relevant. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.104.51.181 (talk) 12:55, 18 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It was also unreferenced, so you were correct to remove it. --Jameboy (talk) 13:38, 18 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Other activities

[edit]

Updated to include the details of the Channel 4 Dispatches: 'How to Buy a Football Club' programme shown on July 18th, 2011. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Soulrebelno1 (talkcontribs) 11:47, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

While we welcome your contributions to Wikipedia, the content you have added is a copyright violation. You cannot simply copy text from a copyrighted work and paste it into this article. What makes matters worse is that you have used the article you copied as a reference, which was a pretty silly thing to do. Try re-writing it in your own words and then re-add it. Until then, it has to be removed. – PeeJay 12:26, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

PeeJay, when you delete someone's edit then leave a reason, it's very rude and lazy not to, how are people supposed know the reason why you have deleted the edit? (Soulrebelno1 (talk) 19:30, 25 July 2011 (UTC))[reply]

Channel 4 Dispatches TV programme rewritten and updated. (Soulrebelno1 (talk) 19:30, 25 July 2011 (UTC))[reply]

I did leave a reason, it's right there above your comment. Furthermore, I added an edit summary when I deleted it both times. Don't accuse me of not doing something when it's quite clear that I have. – PeeJay 19:36, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Firstly, your comment didn't appear on this page until after my second edit, when I added the section 'Other activities' to this talk page and there was no entry in the edit summary on the Revision history. Also, I don't know the reason why you sent me the Wikipedia Ownership of articles link, were you trying to be smart again. I know I do not own the article, do you? What I added on my third attempt was fact, backed up by references, you have edited yet again because you think your version is better. Maybe you should read the Wikipedia Neutral point of view (NPOV) page. (Soulrebelno1 (talk) 21:24, 25 July 2011 (UTC))[reply]

England career

[edit]

Hi I added a note on his final match and removed an unsourced bit about playing a game out on the left. Beside that I would like to say I disagree with the part that says England at Italia 90 played better without Robson in the team. They may have been flat against the Irish but against the Dutch they put in a good performance. Firestar47 (talk) 16:18, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

United Captain

[edit]

The article does not seem to say when Robson was made captain at United and I think this should be mentioned. I recently saw another page (a list of ManU captains) that said 1982 but no specification of precisely when. Firestar47 (talk) 21:29, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
