I can't speak for our collegues over at the Dutch wikiproject, but speaking from a Belgian perspecive, I think the French-language version (Bourgmestre) has a wider currency in the English language than Burgemeester. On another note, could this entire article not profitably be moved to form a subsection of either Burgomaster (another curious spelling itself) or Mayor? ---Brigade Piron (talk) 15:54, 3 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The same idea here. It is a sign of laziness to keep words untranslated when enough alternatives are present. Moreover, it is a sign of arrogance: as if the Dutch are that exceptional that the word “burgemeester” cannot be properly translated into English, not even by the word burgomaster, that is directly connected to it!
