Early life and family[edit]

Probably rather too OR and PS to add to the article unless we can find good secondary sources but I think

  • he is the Charles Stephens whose birth was registered quarter 2 1843 in the Hackney Union district, mother: Chowles, volume: 03, page 191
  • his parents were Ann Chowles and William Stephens whose marriage was registered in quarter 4 1841 in Marylebone district, volume 1, page 213
  • in the 1851 census the family are at School House, Hagley, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire; William is a National Schoolmaster
  • in the 1861 census he is a visitor to the Handy family at Hampson, Shipton Olliffe, Northleach, Gloucestershire
    • Ann and William are still at School House, Hagley but with no other family; there is a Handy housemaid at Hagley Hall on the same page
  • his marriage to Helen Grundy was registered in Upton-on-Severn district in quarter 2 1869, volume 6c, page 405

I will add the maiden name of his wife as that agrees to the 1871 and 1881 censuses we are already using and give his sister-in-law as Sophia Grundy. --Cavrdg (talk) 16:22, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for noting this. We could also do with a picture. Perhaps one day. Philafrenzy (talk) 22:19, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
