[edit]Mr Calouste Gulbenkian died in 1955, and I have changed the Biography stub to reflect this. Bilious 09:14, 6 November 2006 (UTC)
During World War II Gulbenkian initially stayed in France but decided in April 1942 to emigrate to the United States. As a first stop, after an invitation from the Portuguese Ambassador in France, Calouste went to Lisbon for a short stay to rest before his trip to New York. He decided to stay; perhaps because of the stable society, the low taxes, and the absence of a prying media. In Lisbon he felt very welcome – he wrote later “that he had never felt anywhere else” such hospitality as in Lisbon, a quiet city in a Europe devastated by war.
He lived at the Hotel Aviz, Lisbon, for thirteen years and died in Lisbon on 20 July 1955, aged 86. His buried in London St.Sarkis's Church, built in dedication of his father, in 1922. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wirdung (talk • contribs) 12:59, 19 July 2012 (UTC)
Date of birth discrepancy
[edit]The Turkish and Greek WP articles say he was born on 29 March, rather than 23 March. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 11:02, 27 April 2015 (UTC)
Nationality
[edit]British? Turkish? Armenian? Martinevans123 (talk) 17:08, 25 October 2015 (UTC)
Does it matter? There seems to be a minor reversion war going on with this article. Gulbenkian seems to have held at least two nationalities during his life (but never Armenian nationality); to start the article with "Calouste Gulbenkian was an Armenian businessman" or "Calouste Gulbenkian was a British businessman" both seem wrong to me. He was a British citizen; his family was of Armenian origin and he had empathy for the Armenian community, but that doesn't make him Armenian. Martin Luther King's entry in Wikipedia doesn't start with the statement "Martin Luther King was an African Baptist minister", and nor should it.
Gulbenkian probably regarded "nationality" as unimportant. You need one in order to get a passport; during his lifetime, a British passport was one of the better ones you could have. He lived in various countries. Sayitclearly (talk) 09:50, 4 June 2018 (UTC)
- @Sayitclearly: He was also of French nationality if I'm not mistaken. Étienne Dolet (talk) 16:14, 4 June 2018 (UTC)
