Alumni

[edit]

Sources for Kerry Packer & Rod Kafer: [1], [2]. I think playing for the Wallabies merits inclusion here - I'm guessing Rod Kafer was deleted by accident while fixing up recent vandalism? I suspect we had several different editors from one IP, probably Canberra Grammar students who've just discovered Wikipedia. --Calair 22:25, 10 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Off the topic of Kerry Packer, should Jeremy Huntley also get a mention? He is currently doing his Yr 12 HSC, so you could consider him out of school. He is a swimmer, who went to the commonwealth games tryouts in 2005 (him being in year 11). Just consider it.--Will James 02:41, 3 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Are we entirely sure that it is right to include the serial killer? I know it says "notable", but it kind of implies that its about GOOD people. --Will James 05:47, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

To find out how the wikipedia thinks of notability see Wikipedia:Notability (people). No serial killers are listed to my knowledge but the list does include a former dux who is a convicted murderer. He definitely meets the guideline being the subject of extensive long term media coverage. See also a dictionary definition of notable, for example wiktionary:notable - there is no point of view factored in, ie goodness is not part of the definition. --Golden Wattle talk 09:55, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
FWIW, although I think things have thawed a little since I was there, my recollection is that CGS were less embarrassed by Eastman's name on the honour board than by Whitlam's ;-) (Which is one of the reasons why notability doesn't involve any judgement on good/bad; it'd be impossible to reach agreement.) --Calair 12:16, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Picture formatting

[edit]

The thumb pic midway thru the article is such a beautiful picture of the school. Does anyone know how to get it into a larger format on the article? 58.178.11.100 01:05, 7 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Roll of honour

[edit]

Surely the roll of honour, recently added to the article, is not complete as I thought Eddison house was named after the Eddison boys who died in WW2 and who are also remembered in Eddison Park in Woden? --A Y Arktos\talk 21:17, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's a long time since I was at CGS, but I'm pretty sure there were many more names on the honour roll up on the wall in assembly hall than are listed here. As important as it might be for the school to commemorate these people, I'm not convinced that they really need to be listed in this article. --Calair 02:36, 24 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
And yes, there were three Eddison boys killed in WWII - see e.g. Hansard. --Calair 02:40, 24 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism

[edit]

I realise testicles are inherently funny if you're a bored schoolkid, but seems like half the edits to this article lately have been vandalism. Maybe time to semi-protect? --Calair 12:36, 6 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Houses

[edit]

I made several changes to the section about the Junior School Houses. I may be wrong, but aren't there also mascots for these houses? eg. Lion for CJ Shakespeare, Dragon for Edwards, or are these just senior schoolisms? --Will James 02:37, 3 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, the senior schools have a animal mascot each, but I am not sure if there are junior school mascots. The senior school mascots include a fish, a winged horse, and a kookaburra. Finally, Eddison house is named after the three brothers who died in war. The Wiggle Fish 11:26, 29 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Monaro Grammar

[edit]

Should Monaro Grammar School also get a mention?

Yes at that was the pre-cursor to CGS, essentially re-named 121.79.19.4 (talk) 21:55, 5 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Greg Roberts

[edit]

An anon editor listed Gregory David Roberts as a CGS alumnus. I get no relevant Google hits on '+"gregory david roberts" +"canberra grammar"', ditto for "gregory roberts" and "greg roberts". The articles I did find about him, like this one, don't mention a Canberra connection; he was born in Melbourne and committed his early crimes in Victoria. If there's a good cite I've missed, by all means re-add him, but without a citation it seems dubious to me. --Calair 12:07, 26 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Shane Rattenbury?

[edit]

Given that Shane Rattenbury has now been elected to the ACT Legislative assembly, and given his profile with greenpeace, i suggest we add him as a notable alumni. 130.56.32.2 (talk) 05:39, 25 October 2008 (UTC)  Done--Matilda talk 02:07, 26 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It might be worthwhile noting that he was also elected as speaker of the chamber 121.79.19.4 (talk) 21:54, 5 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
