Notable persons

In case you're wondering what's happened to the Notable persons section, it has been deleted in favor of the page Category:Subjects of the Sign of Cancer. If you want to add a notable person go there. --Carmelita 21:04, 21 October 2006 (UTC)

Merge

The astrology section in the Cancer (constellation) article requires some serious culling since there is already this article.--JyriL talk 20:24, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

Astrology is a separate topic from astronomy. It is a good idea to keep astrological reflections in a separate series of articles, interlinked with the astronomy constellations via some consistent and neat system, for those who happen to be interested in both topics. Astrological texts can be long and extensive, while astronomical texts can be overly technical and full of listings. I believe astronomers and astrologers alike thinkt that would be a good solution. Myth is another topic however - myth is important for amateur astronomers for memorizing the constellations, and I can imagine it's important for astrologers for motivating their beliefs... Don't Merge

  • These are really different disciplines sharing a somewhat common nomenclature but interpreting it in vastly different ways. Merging astronomy and astrology would be akin to grouping chemistry with alchemy because both share the same roots. --09:17, 14 February 2007 (UTC)Dmuk

Compatibility

Can someone explain the whole "compatibility" thing somewhere? On each of the twelve astrology sign pages, there is a compatibilty section that shows whether that sign has Compatablity, Possible Compatabilty, Incompatibility, Squared Compatibility, or Opposite Compatability with another sign. I understand compatible, possible and incompatible, but what does "Squared Compatibility" mean, and is "Opposite" any better or worse than "Incompatible"? I'm sure that if I don't understand it, there are other visitors to the website that also would like an explanation. BucsWeb 12:29, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

  • It seems that, instead of answering the above question about "Squared Compatibility", someone has decided to remove that category. Now, someone checking this page has no clue what their compatibility is with Aquarius, Aries or Gemini. Removing a section doesn't answer a question, it only creates more questions, so I am reverting this section back to how it was before I asked my first question. BucsWeb 20:42, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

Where is the famous persons page?

Carmelita said it was moved, but i can't find it. Was it deleted?—Preceding unsigned comment added by Applekid-a (talkcontribs) 19:28, July 25, 2007

It was reimplemented as a category, Category:Cancers. As you can see from the redlink, that category no longer exists. Cancer and Earth compatibility

Hello I am A cancer and I have a ton of friends that are earth zodiacs like for example Taurus (very compatable),virgo (possible compatable) ,and capricorn (somewhat comapatable) and scorpio.188.230.132.58 (talk) 22:40, 12 May 2011 (UTC)

Name of this sign

Does anyone have a problem with the name of this sign, and the fact that one of the worst human deseases shares that same name? --Nathanael Bar-Aur L. (talk) 13:43, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

  • It's not as though the astrological sign was named after the disease. The word Cancer comes from the Latin Cancri which literally means "crab". The word has been used as the name of the astrological sign far longer than it has been used as a disease. According to its entry on Wiktionary, the word cancer was applied to cancerous tumors because the enlarged veins resembled the legs of a crab. If anyone has a problem with the two sharing the same name, perhaps they should have a problem with whoever named the disease rather than the name of the astrological sign. BucsWeb (talk) 13:58, 26 January 2008 (UTC)
As a Cancerian, I have always preferred the poetic version Moonchild which was often used for Cancerians in the early 1970s. That name, however, is just a nickame, therefore not official so could never be used for a Wikipedia article in lieu of the correct Cancer.--jeanne (talk) 07:45, 7 January 2009 (UTC)
i dunno who appointed you arbitor of what is "correct", but an awful lot of newspapers (majority?) have used the term "Moon Child" since those 70s you cite. it should definitely be prominently in the article, as an "alternate" name at the very least. and maybe a redirect page of its own.
also, some ETYMOLOGY of the name is in order -- did it just SPRING UP as a poetic/"PC" alternative in the 60s/70s -- indeed, to cast off resemblance to the disease? -- or is there actually some history there? any ancient/latin/etc uses of a corresponding term?
is this name change reflected in most other languages as well? 66.105.218.66 (talk) 23:32, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

White horse symbol for cancer

How about including a section re the old white horse symbol for cancer? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.174.251.206 (talk) 14:06, 29 August 2010 (UTC)

...or the constellation was probably the original Canis Minor or connected with the constellation including the star Procyon, and with the other constellation Sextans located southwest. In ancient astrology, Cancer may be the 6th not the 4th sign, when one adds Orion, Perseus and Auriga when the sun, moon and planets crossed farther north or south on the ecliptic. The idea of a "horse" instead of a "crab" is interesting, unless the adjacent constellations Leo and Gemini each resembled a horse. 71.102.3.122 (talk) 06:46, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
Cancer was symbolized in a number of pre-modern European cultures, depicted as a boat, or boar (pig), and chicken/rooster. They and the Chinese/East Asian cultures depicted the constellation of Virgo of the zodiac as a bear or a cat. The modern day constellation design of Cancer and Virgo (astrology) are based on the ancient Greeks and Mesopotamians' idea of what these imaginary and artifically constructed depictions of star groups looked like not shared by every culture. 71.102.24.62 (talk) 06:10, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

Current image in use

The image being used at the moment looks more like a lobster than a crab - isn't it obvious? I think a change is in order (offhand I realize they're both crustaceans, but still. An obvious image in keeping with the name, no?).--203.79.96.4 (talk) 11:49, 26 April 2012 (UTC)

Id like to say first it is NOT a lobster. Why can't we change it to the crab!? Second, the characteristics section is so unfinished and really did not even have any characteristics anyway. Upsetting. Redirection of Western Zodiac signs

On 22 October 2012 the contents of the articles for the individual signs of the western zodiac (Pisces (astrology) etc.) were removed and replaced with redirects to Astrological sign#Western zodiac signs. These edits were made by User:Dominus Vobisdu with the edit summary: Unsourced and unsourceable cruft. No justification for stand-alone article. This did not seem to follow a community discussion.

Following concerns raised at the Reference Desk I will, after posting this, restore the articles to the form they were in immediately before their redirection. At least some of the articles seem to have been significantly reduced in size also prior to this redirection, however I have not reverted these changes.

Because I am sure editors may wish to discuss this (perhaps to reinstate the redirects, or make other changes to these articles), however a discussion spread among the talk pages twelve articles in question would be too dissipated, I suggest Talk:Astrological_sign#Redirection_of_Western_Zodiac_signs as a centralised discussion location. An editor with more experience than I in Wikipedia policies may wish to move this discussion to a better location. LukeSurl t c 15:20, 23 October 2012 (UTC)

Expanding stub to an article for a class assignment

Hello, I am new to Wikipedia and I am trying to expand this stub to an article for a writing assignment for school. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you and I apologize in advance for mistakes that I will make while trying to learn how to edit things in Wikipedia.

Model for this article

Pisces (astrology) (B-class) seems to be a good example of how to write about an astrological sign in an encyclopedic style, using published book sources rather than dubious online sources. MartinPoulter (talk) 17:16, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

Corrections to dates, date and citation format in sign articles

I have created a module which encapulates values for the dates the Sun enters and exits the various signs; the data is taken from the U.S. Naval Observatory's Multiyear Interactive Computer Almanac and covers 2015 through most of 2050. The Template:Zodiac date produces some erroneous results, so I hope to implement the change this week.

It is only practical to implement one date and citation style for the module and infobox, so it would be helpful if we can agree on what format to use for the various sign articles. Please discuss at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Astrology#Corrections to dates, date and citation format in sign articles. Jc3s5h (talk) 20:55, 23 March 2016 (UTC)

Chinese mythology

In Chinese star lore, Cancer (as it is known in Western Constellations) is in the 23rd of the 28 mansions or xiu.[1] This mansion is called Gui which roughly translates to "ghosts".[1] The Chinese divided the sky into four quarters, each with its own direction, season, and mythical creature. Cancer exists in the Red (Vermillion) Bird of the south. It is associated with summer.[1]

//The reason for this change is that the source material only states that xiu is the name of the 23rd star, and that it resides in the constellation we know as Cancer. 96.42.87.76 (talk) 19:08, 15 February 2017 (UTC)

"Negative sign"?

The intro paragraph describes cancer as a "negative sign" without explanation of the meaning of this idea in astrology, and the hyperlink for "negative sign" simply goes to the page for the mathematical concepts of plus/minus signs, which seems not relevant to this topic. What does it mean to describe the sign as "negative" in the context of astrology? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.90.118.254 (talk) 16:42, 30 June 2018 (UTC)

Amao reliable source for sidereal zodiac dates?

Qwirkle‎ (talk · contribs) has twice removed the following source:

  • Amao, Albert (2016). The Birth of a New Consciousness and the Cycles of Time. AuthorHouse. ISBN 978-1-504-97542-1. {{cite book}}: Invalid |ref=harv (help)

This causes the associated inline citation to have no target. The claim that was supported by the source was

under the sidereal zodiac, the Sun transits this area between approximately July 16 and August 15.

In edit summaries Qwirkle claims that the source is self-published. I do not have the book, so do not know if it is self published. Even if it is self published it may be acceptable if Amao is an expert in the field, as described at WP:RSSELF. I do not believe that simply removing the source without examining the correctness of the claim in the article is an improvement. Jc3s5h (talk) 15:50, 2 February 2019 (UTC)

The publisher only deals in self-published work. Qwirkle (talk) 16:14, 2 February 2019 (UTC)

RFC: Should a passage be removed?

Should the following passage be removed:

According to Vedic astrology, some people born around the end of July are said to be Sagittarius due to the ascendant having a low degree.[1]

This passage was added by 93.182.104.40 (talk · contribs) after I deleted the passage which the user added today with a different source. Jc3s5h (talk) 15:54, 8 December 2022 (UTC)

Remove. As the person opening the RFC, I believe the passage should be deleted because theartofvedicastrology.com is not a reliable source, and it does not support the passage in dispute. Jc3s5h (talk) 15:54, 8 December 2022 (UTC)

Keep I have added a better source.93.182.104.40 (talk) 16:24, 8 December 2022 (UTC)

Remove. Whatever source you add, the whole passage sounds like gobbledygook to me. AstroLynx (talk) 16:59, 8 December 2022 (UTC)

Remove but the Vedic definition of Cancer should be in the body of the article, to the extent that it is clearly sourced. But IMO the sentence as written, where it is should be removed for multiple reasons:

  • As written it is not directly supported by the source
  • The lead should be a summary of what is in the body and this isn't in the body. Also, things appropriate for the lead would need more coverage in the body.
  • The sentence is a vague statement about one instance where it differs. As written it's too uninformative to be in an enclyclopedia much less in the lead.

Sincerely, North8000 (talk) 21:45, 8 December 2022 (UTC)

Remove Per North8000. If proper sources are found it could be included in the body of the artile. Nemov (talk) 14:20, 29 December 2022 (UTC)

Remove until proper sources can be found. Vis a vis "gobbledygook," it can be argued that all astrology is gobbledegook. Our issue is whether it's verifiable gobbledegook. Darkfrog24 (talk) 01:08, 6 January 2023 (UTC)
