Etymology is questionable

[edit]

I like the etymology (jumping on running boards and stuff) - it's cute, and I've heard it before, but it's also highly questionable.

Merriam Websters says the word itself isn't found in use until 1937, even if the practice predates that.

Merriam Websters also refers to the older word bellhop (1906), from which carhop is obviously a back formation.

I'm removing the running board reference, unless this conflict can be resolved in its favor (i.e. someone comes up with a primary source, not a 2005 pop culture thingie, which uses that word and ties it to the practice of the running boards stunt).Hmoulding (talk) 00:41, 20 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

From the Nat Bailey article:

"Nat Bailey is a restaurateur most well-known for building the first drive-in restaurant in Canada, in 1928, and developing the first car-hop tray."

Someone got a source for this? -- OlEnglish (Talk) 23:13, 31 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
