I think when he was born there Essen was part of the Kingdom of Prussia. The history of Essen article is unclear about its political assignment. I am pretty sure though it was part of the Kingdom of Prussia in the 19th-century.~~~ John Pack Lambert (talk) 22:57, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have a proper reference but that seems correct as per the German Wikipedia entries on Essen, Westphalia and Königsteele (part of Steele, now Essen). Steele was separate from Essen at the time, but both came under Prussian rule after the defeat of Napoleon in 1815 at the latest. VampaVampa (talk) 00:43, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
