Documented Hardy's pinch-hitting for Ted Williams with Retrosheet link. The narrative highlights it.

RED SOX 1ST: Runnels singled; Tasby forced Runnels (third to second); HARDY BATTED FOR WILLIAMS; Hardy lined into a double play (pitcher to first) [Tasby out at first]; Ted Williams fouled a ball off his ankle; this was the only time someone pinch hit for Ted Williams in his career; 0 R, 1 H, 0 E, 0 LOB. Red Sox 0, Orioles 0.

Hardy pinch hit for Roger Maris in a 1958 game when both were with the Cleveland Indians. On May 18, in the 11th inning, the Chicago White Sox brought in lefty Billy Pierce to face Maris. Hardy batted for Maris and hit a three-run homer to end the game.

Those three RBI represented half of Hardy's total for the year, and one-third of the total for his tenure in Cleveland. Admittedly, Maris hasn't quite the stature of Williams, or even Yastrzemski, but has always had some Hall of Fame support. Roger was dragged back into the spotlight late in 2022 when his 61-year-old A.L. home run record was threatened. WHPratt (talk) 16:05, 25 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
