Maybelle Carter popularized this technique but did not originate it
[edit]She learned the technique from a Black guitar player named Leslie Riddle. Documentation for this can be found in a number of places online, including this interview given by Mother Maybelle herself. JudahH (talk) 15:15, 26 January 2012 (UTC)
- After posting the above, I decided to take the time to accordingly edit the article myself. JudahH (talk) 16:06, 26 January 2012 (UTC)
Broken Links
[edit]The link for footnote 7 appears to be broken and 6 appears to link to an unavailable video.
Technique origin
[edit]The lead and the origin section say the origins of the technique are unknown, while the technique section say it's based on banjo frailing. Secondly the origin section says Maybelle was influenced by Lesley Riddle. So what is it? Some consistency would be nice. IrishStephen (talk) 18:50, 2 November 2022 (UTC)
Maybelle developed the Scratch on her own, as can be heard in the first Carter Family recordings from 1927. Lesley Riddle did not meet A. P. & the Family until 1928. Apparently Riddle showed her a different yet similar technique, the specifics of which I have not found in any literature, but he certainly did not invent the Carter Scratch.
