An outsider's guide to ministry fission[edit]

The Department for Education and Skills (DfES) was bifurcated in 2007 by Gordon "Solomon" Brown's government to create the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) and the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS). In June 2009 the DIUS was folded into the new Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS). Some older documents have been cursorily updated with new departmental acronyms, on a web page pointing to the document or on the title page of the document itself, or both, with the body of the underlying document retaining the contemporary acronym.

The Centre for the Economics of Education also appears to have experience at least one of these nuclear bureaucratic events. It is reported by one source to be a transformation of the Higher Education Research Unit. The CEE includes as CEE news stories some citing research by the Centre for Economic Performance; I don't know whether this is a previous incarnation of the CEE, or a more or less loosely affiliated research group at the LSE.
