I am no expert on this, so I really dare not to speak with authority here.

But I think the plot of this story has one more detail that is not conveyed in this article. The article only talks about the anger of the duchess for being rejected in her advances, to trigger all further misfortunes. But in my reference, the duchess also fears that her subject actually might love someone of lower rank in the court. This also adds jealousy for the other lady to the tragedy. But maybe the article does not mention this perse, but readers do understand this easily (i am really no native english reader)
