Talk:Chaplet of the Seven Sorrows
Unclear and Outdated
[edit]This article devotes a good deal of space listing indulgences granted for 200 days, 100 days, etc. without explaining: 1.) that the time periods mentioned refer to the remission of temporal punishment equivalent to that which would have previously been granted to a penitent performing the required canonical penance for the same period of time; 2.) how one performs a canonical penance of 150 years in one lifetime; and 3.) that all references to "days" and "years" was removed from the Enchiridion over forty years ago. - Yes, item 2 would necessarily involve a huge amount of vitamin intake, of course. Wink. So please correct it. Thanks. History2007 (talk) 05:18, 26 May 2011 (UTC)
It did not seem necessarily correct to simply substitute 150 "days" for 150 "years" as a particularly strict confessor might well have doled out a somewhat lengthy penance; which would have required the assistance of friends and relatives, or more likely, a rather generous endowment to a local house of prayer. In lieu of that, the section in question has been summarized to retain the sense that the mentioned Popes approved and encouraged this devotion, while reducing, it is hoped, the confusing and now no longer applicable material.Mannanan51 (talk) 22:39, 28 May 2011 (UTC)mannanan51
- Please feel free to fix this page as you see fit. I have really even forgotten this topic - it was about 200 articles ago... So I will leave the fixes here in your hands - you obviously know the topic. I just watch it against vandals now and have not touched it for a while. History2007 (talk) 01:04, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
Raccolta?
[edit]I looked through the Raccolta and could not find the practice as described. Please give a more detailed reference if possible. Rwflammang (talk) 12:32, 23 October 2011 (UTC)
- Yes that is strange. The 1866 version on the Franciscan website has it as item 97 as does the 1857 version published in London, page 208. More recent versions do not. Must call the Holy Office to figure it out. I do not have time to work on this page anytime soon (busy with other pages) but I fixed that item for now with a quick band-aid anyway. - The grants of indulgences now in force are listed in the Enchiridion Indulgentiarum which has replaced the Raccolta. The former determination by days and years has been abolished since 44 years ago: see Indulgentiarum doctrina. Esoglou (talk) 20:13, 23 October 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks. History2007 (talk) 20:27, 23 October 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. I should have made myself more clear when I requested a source; I have no interest at all in the indulgences, but only in the prescribed form of the devotion. Unfortunately, the new Enchiridion is largely useless for providing such prescriptions, and so the old Raccoltas are still indispensible. Thanks, History2007, for finding these old editions for us. - Actually Esoglou knows more about the indulgence issues and is fixing the other pages. In any case, I guess in a few days it will settle down. But I think the new (somewhat long) indulgence explanations here do not pertain to this devotion. This page should teach what the devotion is, not be a general tutorial on indulgences. So I suggest moving those to indulgence pages, for that material will just stop people from reading about the devotion. History2007 (talk) 13:39, 24 October 2011 (UTC)
