Electrochemistry: Symmetry Factor through eye of Buttler-Volmer equation

The factor or parameter is a hardcore topic and of absolute importance,appreciation.It has wandered the Physical Chemists from decades and is still a hot topic for discussion.The factor is an important parameter in an electrochemical electron transfer reaction,kinetic and thermodynamic studies.

I have tried to visualise the factor through my own view and let me share with u:

Symmetry factor is a potential energy parameter used in kinetic studies of electrochemical electron transfer reactions.The factor is analogous to Charge transfer coefficient but is applicable only to single step reaction. This symmetry factor is sometimes called as Barrier symmetry factor which gives a rough idea that it has to do something with potential surfaces or profiles,the potential barriers created during electron transfer reaction.During electron transfer the ion doesn't jump to electrode but has to pass through a potential barrier or activated complex.

The electron transfer or ion movement occur within the inter-facial region i,e between electron and OHP and thus during redox reaction the activated complex formed will be within this region depending upon nature of reaction, reactant's,electrode and solvent.

This symmetry factor give the symmetry of this potential energy profile,it gives the position as well as shape of the potential profile.Thus called symmetry factor,since it is called barrier factor because it give the extent of potential required by ion to reach and react at electrode. The value of β can lie between 0,1

If β=0,it implies the activated complex is formed extreme left,closer to metal electrode surface and is product like,hence will be influenced by metal potential.The most characteristic feature of these reactions is that they r under chemical as well as electric control.
