I've found online this clipping from one of C. Hugo Jacobi's 1923 Reminiscences of early days in Watertown columns, but without a date or publishing indicia. The columns were originally published in German in the Watertown Weltburger, then translated and published in English in 1924 in the Watertown Daily Times in February of 1924.

"When he first came here he bought 15 acres near the city limits and as long as he lived on his farm he invariably came to town afoot, his cane in his right hand, an umbrella under his arm and the long stemmed pipe in his mouth, held by his left hand. Everybody would have been in doubt in the city had Beckmann [sic] come otherwise.
