He published a cartoon accusing MLK, Jr., of hypocritically tolerating or promoting violence while giving lip service to nonviolence. Brooks got his assessment of King and the Birmingham civil and economic rights protests very wrong and helped spread calumny against King in the city where he was, not long after, murdered.
