Selective School

[edit]

I'd dispute classifying the school as a "Selective School" in the information panel on the right and in the introductory paragraph. Mention of the selective stream in the "History" section is enough; the fact remains that the school is still a normal secondary school and the majority of students are mainstream.

Chatswood High school as a partially selective high school. If anything It should be classified as that. 202.7.166.173 12:20, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Chatswood High School Logo.jpg

[edit]

Image:Chatswood High School Logo.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 05:01, 2 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have provided the full rationale required under the fair use guidelines, deleted the deletion tag, and accordingly preseved the image. —C.Fred (talk) 19:18, 2 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Demountables

[edit]

Demountables are not considered permanent. The DET policy [[1]] makes it clear that they can be moved at any time. In the light of this, and while it's a matter of semantics, saying that they are permanent is technically incorrect. -danjel (talk to me) 11:04, 3 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Looking at the article, what's left unclear is whether the demountables are still in use. I agree that permanent isn't the right word for the job; perhaps a sentence should be added like "As of 2011, the demountables are still in use as classrooms"? —C.Fred (talk) 16:08, 3 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. I'll work something around in a moment. -danjel (talk to me) 01:17, 4 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Final sentence is better, but I don't know why you would downplay the role of the school in the resettlement of Vietnamese refugees. CHS has been actively multicultural since the 1960s, much more so than say, Killara, Kuringai, or any other North Shore high school. Out of goodwill, I'll leave you a day or so to revert, otherwise I'll do it myself. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.210.153.244 (talk) 08:21, 4 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps you should take the time over the next day or so to find a reliable source that says Chatswood handled more Vietnamese refugees than other North Shore schools. If the claim isn't sourced, it's subject to removal. —C.Fred (talk) 17:16, 4 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I know for a fact that the demountables are dodgy. The Teachers' Federation has complained about it endlessly. Could be a good place to look. -danjel (talk to me) 19:57, 4 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't say they weren't dodgy. I hate demountables as a rule. This doesn't alter the fact that they remain as an important part of CHS history. As for your objection to the word "permanent" you might also be aware that until recently, the entire school was scheduled to be levelled to make way for unit blocks, with all the students to be relocated to the Kuringai College site. This was only avoided by the re-routing of the Epping-Chatswood railway.

Nothing is "permanent" by those standards. As For Fred's "contribution" I can only urge him to pay attention. I haven't proposed making any comparative entry, merely that the ESL buildings were used exclusively by Vietnamese refugees. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.210.153.244 (talk) 23:21, 4 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Demountables

[edit]

I attended this school from '74 till '79. There were no demountables then. The area which they are now in was the staff car park and out of bounds to students. Also there was a cadet unit at the school when I started but it may have been gone by the time I finished, There was a "donga", a portable corrugated iron shed in the staff car park area which belonged to the cadets. It was not what you would have called a multi-cultural school when I was there, I'm of mixed eurasian background and I was an oddity at the time. Most of the students at the time were born in Australia, even if their parents weren't.

During my time at the school renovations were carried out to the library, enclosing a part of the open mezzanine area with timber panelling and double glazing in order to make a classroom. Also in '78 there was remedial work carried out to the brick retaining walls between the admin building and what was then the wing which held the music rooms downstairs and the art rooms upstairs. During my time at the school classrooms also got ceiling fans (luxury!) and they all already had a gas heater in the front of the classroom.

In my first year we had a record intake (up till then, at least) with 8 first form classes of around 30 students each. After 2nd form the terminology changed and we were year 9 etc. Originally we had 8 periods a day but this was later changed ('78?) to a two week timetable of 6 periods a day. The tuckshop was run by the P&C, or at least it was manned by volunteer mums. 203.45.150.174 (talk) 14:24, 22 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
