Pronuncuation
[edit]I would be very surprised to discover the given pronunciation is correct. Is there a reference to establish that it's pronounced any differently than it would be in French? TCC (talk) (contribs) 02:58, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
- [1] Not the greatest source, so remove if you object. Durova 03:50, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
- Not as far as I can tell. Here is a glossary of old weapon and armor terms in French. "Chausse" has no accent. (Added: this seems to be distinct from the adjective "chaussé" meaning "shod" and the heraldic term meaning "shoe".) But I'll look it up later in the OED; it ought to be in there. TCC (talk) (contribs) 03:52, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
- Sorry; the above is based on your original reply. I'll still hold off on changing it until I can find something definitive. TCC (talk) (contribs) 03:56, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
You've got a point. I added the pronunciation uncritically since both French and English tended to mangle their early loan words. Thanks for taking an interest and please correct me if I'm mistaken. Durova 04:05, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
- First, the OED (original version, compact edition) gives the word only in the plural, chausses. I suppose correctly used it's more like "pants"; one can of course speak of a single "pant" -- which I suspect is a back-formation -- but it's not normal. Chausses then. It gives two different pronunciations. It was "originally naturalized" as [ˈtʃaʊsɛz] which is pretty much what I'd expect for an older French loanword. (That's "ch" as in "choose", "au" pronounced as the "ou" in "loud", and a regular short "e" as in "estate".) But it also says that it's now more often pronounced as the modern French [ʃos]. (This was the late 19th-early 20th century though, so I would guess the French pronunciation now predominates.)
- This is the problem with words you see written all the time but never acutally say, isn't it? TCC (talk)
- By the way, since Chausse->Chausses requires a page move, I'll leave it up to someone who's been working on the article. Personally, I hate it when I've been working on something and someone else just barges in and rearranges everything. TCC (talk) (contribs) 22:41, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
- It had been a few days, so I just went ahead and did it. TCC (talk) (contribs) 20:48, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
Bayeux Tapestry
[edit]Does it indeed show knights wearing chausses? It looks to me more like hose underneath hauberks. TCC (talk) (contribs) 22:56, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
- I agree, as the picture is to early for proper chausses anyway. I'm going to remove the pic. Master z0b (talk) 23:57, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
Image caption
[edit]I don't think that image actually illustrates poleyns, rather it is most likely padded cuisses over the chausses. I'm going to remove that reference. Master z0b (talk) 04:01, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
