Chinese source to use[edit]

I paste this article on Chen Jitong here, as a source for further expansion.--Niohe 23:44, 6 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dubious quote[edit]

The quote is widely circulated, but does not seem reliable. I removed it from the article but preserve it here, just in case. It is attributed to Solovyov, a Russian who attended an evening affair in Paris and recounts a speech given by Chen, which includes the quote:

We will get everything we need, all the technology of your intellectual and material culture, but we will adopt not one element of your faith, not one of your ideas or even one of your tastes ... You are yourselves providing the means wherby we will vanquish you.| Chinese military attaché in Paris, Chen Jitong| ........Jonathan B. A. Bailey, Great Power Strategy in Asia: Empire, Culture And Trade, 1905-2005, p. 17

The footnote is to a tertiary work, so I searched for other sources:

  • Enemies from the East, an anthology of Solovyof's essays, p. 34, 217 attributes the quote to “Chang Chih-tung,” which is not possible. Chang Chih-tung (Zhang Zhidong)) was an entirely different person.
  • Scott China and the International System p 114 cites David Oye, Russian Orientalism (2001) p. 83 which has no mention of Chen Jitong (and my search of the book found none).
  • Lim, China and Japan in the Russian Imagination [1] is the best source I have found because it directly translates from the Russian. Lim states that the words were “the crux” of what Chen said (i.e. , not an exact quote, which would not have been probable under the circumstances).
