Suggestions for improvement

[edit]

A big thanks for bringing out an article on important railway line of Tamil Nadu. Commendable effort. I have few suggestions for the improvement in this article. First of the title may be changed from the present one to Main Line, Tamil Nadu, as it is popularly called/referred in official and public circles as Main Line. Though there are few mainlines in wikipedia, this may be sufficed with Tamil Nadu, as there exist few railway lines in India which were also called as main line alongwith unique route names. I was about to do a redirect with the suggested title, but in the mean time you yourself made a redirect from Chennai Egmore - Vridhachalam to Chennai Egmore - Thanjavur, hence i halted my move as some improvements were seen.

The stretch between Chennai Egmore-Thanjavur was termed as Main line only until the opening of railway line between Villupuram and Trichy via Vridhachalam, but presently it is referred as MAIN LINE (Villupuram - Mayiladuthurai - Thanjavur - Trichy), as this stretch comes under the jurisdiction of Tiruchirappalli Railway Division.

Some Ref:

The Branch lines are mentioned in both the infobox and in the lead section. Hence to as avoid disambiguity and keep the infobox stick to its relevance of title of the article, the details of branch lines may be removed from either infobox or lead.

The "Railway Reorganisation" may be merged with "History" section or include within it as a sub-heading.

In the electrification section, mentioning about VM-PDY and VM-VRI-TPJ line seems irrelevant to the theme of the article. These could be well mentioned in "See also" section.

I will take up the matter point-wise:
1. The main line extends from Chennai to Tiruchirappalli and so calling only a part of it the same as the whole would be wrong. The Thanjavur-Tiruchirappalli section could be included but this article is already too heavy. The Tiruchirappali-Nagapattinam sector would probably need a separate page for proper coverage. I have earlier also split some lines into separate parts, as for example the Mumbai Dadar-Chennai Egmore line is split into three parts - Mumbai Dadar-Solapur section, Solapur-Guntakal section and Guntakal-Chennai Egmore section. I have also similarly split up the Delhi-Chennai line and other lines.
2. Ideally, each line should be covered separately. However, I have been covering branch lines also along with the main line primarily because the possibility of their being covered in the near future separately seems to be remote. If some one decides to cover in detail one or more branch lines I have covered along with a main line, he is free to do so. The information pertaining to branch lines is as important as that of the main line and as such should not be placed under 'see also'.
3. In order to get a proper format for the railway line pages I had put up some of the railway line pages for DYK - Nagpur-Bhusawal section, Bhusawal-Kalyan section and Jharsuguda-Vizianagaram line. There my articles were in for major review before they were put up on the Main Page of Wikipedia.
4. I will go for a major copyedit shortly. Please have some patience.

@Chandan Guha: Thanks for your kind response. To be frank, after finishing my article on chord line (for which you provided a excellent RDT), i was keen on to create article on MAIN LINE, but you won the race. Kudos. So i thought i could express my suggestion in the improvement of article. Hence i came to this talk page, before doing edits in the article space itself, as you've done a great job here along with a RDT too, which am yet to try. Well, lets work for the improvement of the article. --βα£α(ᶀᶅᶖᵵᵶ) 15:46, 5 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Let me be clear that I am not in competition with anybody. After developing the pages related to Howrah-Chennai main line, Guntakal-Chennai Egmore section and Chennai Central-Bangalore City line, I turned to lines in Tamilnadu as no body was working on them. Some people were working on Chennai Suburban lines only and some on railway stations. I first did the Jolarpettai-Shoranur line and then planned pages on lines between Chennai and Kanyakumari in three sections - Chennai-Vriddhachalam, Vriddhachalam-Madurai, Madurai-Kanyakumari. Two days after I had put up the first section article on Chennai Egmore-Vriddhachalam section, I found that you have put up the Chord Line, Tamil Nadu article, covering a major part of the section I had put up. It was then that I decided to alter my article to Chennai Egmore-Thanjavur line keeping your article undisturbed. My article still needs some copyediting and I shall get to it shortly.
You have a fixation about the main line. Ideally, the main line article should have come first, because it was a historically earlier line. My article is not about the mainline but a big section of it. You want to convert it to a main line article. I don't want to extend it further. Now, you can do an article on the entire main line, leaving my article as it is. See how the Howrah-Chennai main line is done and also its sections - Howrah-Kharagpur line, Kharagpur-Khurda Road section, Khurda Road-Visakhapatnam section, Visakhapatnam-Vijayawada section and Vijayawada-Chennai section. Along with the main line article you can do an article on the Tiruchirapalli-Nagapattinam line.
Your titles are a bit odd. There are many chord lines and main lines all over the country. I don't think any body calls it Chord Line, Tamil Nadu. Lines/ sections of a longer line are usually identified by the destination stations. It should have been Chennai-Vriddhachalam-Tiruchrappalli chord line. Again the main line should be Chennai-Thanjavur-Tiruchirapalli main line. When two places are connected by more than one line the mention of an intermediate station in the title is essential. See Howrah-Nagpur-Mumbai line and Howrah-Allahabad-Mumbai line,

I have edited my page.
I find that your suggestions are aimed at fresh formatting to suit your thinking. Merely changing formats does not mean improvement. You seem to be new to Wikipedia railway line pages and seem to be groping for a proper format that suits your style. You may experiment with your articles but please don't disturb the formatting of others. Wikipedians have varied styles and as you grow in Wikipedia, you will learn to live with different styles. As I have informed above, my formats are well tested at the international levels and have found a place on the Main Page. You may dislike them but please don't disturb them.
There are very few Wikipedians working on Indian Railway line pages. I intend to move out of Tamil Nadu railway line pages and work on railway pages elsewhere for the time being. I may come back later. You are free to develop Tamil Nadu railway line pages. Develop new pages well and I look forward to your completing the lines up to Kannyakumari.
Best of luck for your first DYK.

@Chandan Guha:Hey i was indeed appreciating efforts put up by you regarding Indian Railways, than me. But please, not in the intention of 'competetion' tone. If so, my apologies. Anyway, i take your suggestions. Thanks for your wishes regarding the DYK. Hope to work with you in future.  Thank you very much! --βα£α(ᶀᶅᶖᵵᵶ) 13:22, 9 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Move error

[edit]

Hi @Chandan Guha, I want to let you know that @Saffrin had moved Chennai Egmore–Thanjavur line to Villupuram–Goldenrock line without any proper reason or rationale. I tried to move it to original title, but it resulted in a message that “SAME PAGE EXISTS”. Hence, i moved to a new title as Chennai Egmore–Thanjavur main line, which i feel near closer and similar to the original one. I think later sometime we can move it to the original title. (N.B:User:Saffrin has a history of providing no explanation in edit summary for any of his edits and no response in his own talk page.)  Thank you very much! --βα£α(ᶀᶅᶖᵵᵶ)(Support) 18:45, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • I had seen the move but could not make up my mind on what to do. Thanks for your move. Earlier, you wanted to take over the page and convert it to main line, but I had restrained you. I have had second thoughts about it. You can work on the page and convert it as you like. The railway route chart has been deleted. Please restore it suitably. Cheers. - Chandan Guha (talk) 00:14, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Chandan Guha: As like you i too have second thoughts on renaming as main line after thoroughly going through the sources. But my suggestion was in the sense of having a popular name as article title as the Villupuram-Mayiladuthurai-Tiruchirappalli is popularly referred as MAIN LINE over the entire Southern Railway zone. Since, i grew up in a similar background i suggested so, otherwise i don't have any qualms over it. As the route map has been removed, i tried my best to insert it. But, the preview say that there are too many templates in the infobox and cannot be worked out now. Also the other parameters of the infobox too becomes in a paragraph mode. I'm considering to ask any rail-related sysops for help on that. And i'll do my best Chandan. Thank you --βα£α(ᶀᶅᶖᵵᵶ)(Support) 16:08, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
