1968-72 was the SECOND Generation Malibu

[edit]

Currently, it has 1964-72 as being the first generation of the Chevrolet Malibu. It is commonly agreed that 1968-72 was the second generation for the GM "A" body cars, including the Chevelle/Malibu series, as noted by the slightly shorter, rounded bodies compared to the previous generation --BigHeadFred

[edit]

The site, MalibuClub.ca is added to the external links section, not as spam, but as a way to redirect those owners of the newer Chevrolet Malibu to a place online that addresses many issues about the car. These issues include problems the car may have, fixes, maintenance, performance, and styling. Only a limited number of resources on the newer Malibus exist on the Internet, making this site extremely valuable. Maliburacing.com (listed also in the external links section) is the answer to the older-type Malibus. The newly added site, MalibuClub.ca, is the answer to the newer-type Malibus. I encourange any Wikipedia editors reviewing the article to take a look at the site and review the resources other owners have contributed concerning the Chevrolet Malibu.

Sever Malibu and Chevelle

[edit]

From 1963(?) until 1978, Malibu was a trim level on a Chevelle, much like Laguna S-3 or Super Sport. General Motors has certainly made it confusing to keep track of, but it was only in 1978 that Malibu became a bona fide model in the Chevy lineup. The timeline should start at that point for the Malibu article, and the info relating to cars before then should be summarized as Chevelle. A mention could be made in both articles of Malibu trim levels on the pre-1978 cars.

Also, how could the Chevrolet Celebrity replace the Malibu? They were made concurrently, and the Malibu (along with all A- and G-body GM's) was replaced in 1988 with the W-platform (Lumina).

The Malibu was actually produced until 1983, not 1988. The Celebrity was in the same class as the Malibu and was relatively new by 1983. --ApolloBoy 04:13, 10 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

SS

[edit]

Between 1964 and 1965, Malibus sold in the U.S. has the SS appearance package (the SS was used in Canada until 1967). In reality, the SS nameplate was exclusive to the Chevelle although 1964 and 1965 (1966/67 for Canada) was the only time the Malibu and SS nameplates coexisted.

Flash forward to 2006 where the top-of-the-line Malibu sedan (the modern version based on GM's Epsilon platform) has the SS option - marrying the SS nameplate to the late-model Malibu is a sacrilege much similar to Oldsmobile's badging of its N-body Cutlass Calais as the 442. Only three times that the famed SS nameplate was used on a front-wheel drive (Monte Carlo and Impala) and the article link about not having a 2008 Malibu SS stands correct - a REAL SS is usually RWD and V8-powered, not FWD. A new Camaro is only a few years away to which the SS nameplate has a righteous place, not on a FWD. If anyone wanted a performance FWD, it should be a winged Honda Civic.

The 1960's are long gone and 'SS' is just a badge. If you are trying to connect some kind of special heritage that you belive GM is obligaed to it's fans to uphold using cars they produced in the 1960's as archetypes for performance cars today, then what you need to do is re-examine the present state of performance cars today.

Your statement "to which the SS nameplate has a righteous place, not on a FWD" shows your ignorance. The forthcoming Cobalt T/C SS is more worthy a car of that stupid badge given today's demands from buyers. It needs no V8 nor RWD to be compeditive in it's segment. Even the S/C SS has had wins in SCCA and Grand-Am KONI Challenge ... and yet because GM decides to put the "almighty" SS badging on it, it's become "sacrilege"!

Serriously, get with the times...and I mean that.--24.89.215.104 (talk) 00:50, 9 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Malibu Page -- Now Even BIGGER with infoboxes!

[edit]

Well, the Malibu image I got from Insideline.com is only a stopgap. If anyone takes pictures of the '08 Malibu, go do it at the Washington Auto Show, IFCAR. I will be taking a buncha images at le Salon International d'auto de Montréal. -- Bull-Doser 04:06, 29 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Is the Malibu Maxx really a wagon?

[edit]

Retail auto sites like Cars.com or Edmunds.com consider the Malubi Maxx a large hatchback. I think this is a better description than station wagon because the Maxx is not in the form of a traditional wagon. There is a small trunk like notch in the rear deck which makes it more hatchback and less wagon. I think this artice should be reivsed to reflect that. volksdaven 19:24, 18 January 2007 (CUT)

Agreed WopOnTour (talk) 08:03, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I really think that Chevrolet Classic should be merged into this article as much of what a Chevrolet Classic is Overlaps what the Malibu is. Basically the Chevrolet Classic is the same car as the Malibu of the previous generation of its 2 runs where the 2004-2006 run used the Fourth generation style that was built from 1997–2003 and the other run of the 2008 model year using the Fifth generation style was/is being produced from 2004-2007. Also many people refer to these cars as Malibus as what was seen in the movie Employee of the Month (2006 film). Because of these reasons I really think Chevrolet Classic should just be merged here and become sub article on this page. Sawblade05 09:34, 17 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think the current version of the Chevrolet Classic article will suffice. It simply disambiguates and refers the reader to one of three other places as the Classic name was just a badge put on an already-existing car. weetbixkid 15:08, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think that the articles should be merged. If you look up the model numbers for "Classics" they are listed as a Malibu. And even more importantly, according to the information that Chevy dealers have received, when the 2008 Malibu is introduced later this fall, the current body style will be rebadged as the Classic again. Cliffordzang 03:13, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree - there is also an unrelated, and relatively popular, Latin American Chevrolet Classic, hence the article should remain a disambig. PrinceGloria 15:30, 10 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Update!

[edit]

Page needs an update; it's already 2008 and the 2004-2007 model Malibu is being displayed as the current model. Crazykrazyqrazy (talk) 17:33, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently someone wants to keep using the outdated picture, because I've changed it to the 2008 and newer model several times only to have someone change it back. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.43.67.174 (talk) 15:52, 10 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, bot generated paragraphs (no, not titles in references, paragraphs) and strangeness.

[edit]

I found the information on the Saddam Hussein taxis strange, so I did some tracing (manually) and found out that someone made a bot to put that in there apparently so that he couldn't be tracked. That, or I hit something else entirely. Would the author of those statements on the Saddam Hussein Malibus please come forward? Just so I'd know if you really made a bot to do that or if I hit something else?

Also, deleted some NPOV. Scryer_360 (talk) 04:13, 19 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Strange but true! I didnt write the original reference to the "Iraqi Taxis" but I can definately confirm their existance,(early 80's Malibu) So I've corrected a few errors in the Iraqi Taxi section, and added some referencesWopOnTour (talk) 08:06, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mexican 4th Gen HP numbers for 350 highly suspect

[edit]

Ok, I realize that emissions regulations were easier to pass in Mexico, but 260 horsepower? Really? Come on! Either those are gross HP numbers instead of net, or somebody's out of their mind. Those power numbers weren't approached until multiport injection was added. I'm inclined to delete the horsepower reference.--King V (talk) 17:08, 21 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Seventh Generation

[edit]

The 2008 Malibu is NOT the Seventh Generation, the car electrically is the same as the 2004-2007 car. The platform is the same (Epsilon I NOT II), basically it migrates the Generation 1 Saturn Aura bits over to the Malibu with a sheet metal redesign. Fundamentally the car is the same as the 2004-2007 model. The Pontiac G6 also got the visible updates (Radio HVAC) in the 2009.5 model year.

I changed it to Sixth Generation Refresh and some yahoo changed it back. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.45.91.218 (talk) 04:07, 27 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Um, yes it is. It moved to an extended version of the platform, and the design is completely new. --Vossanova o< 13:41, 27 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Extended version of the patform was already in existance, and used by the Malibu Maxx. Also as previously stated, the Epsilon I platform (Long Wheel Base) was already in use by the Saturn Aura (2007 release) and Pontiac G6 (2006 release).

The only change in 2008 was the MAXX was dropped, and the regular sedan was placed on the LWB platform. This doesn't constitute a generation change, because it is a refresh, not a redesign. The changed you see on the 2008 Malibu while physically huge are no different than the changes on a Jeep Grand Cherokee from 2007 to 2008 (where the car basically got a new interior). That isn't counted as a generational change, and neither is the Malibu.

However when the can moves to Epsilon II in 2012 that will be a generational change. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.45.166.145 (talk) 17:54, 1 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The Grand Cherokee got a refreshed interior and a few minor changes to the outside. The entire exterior and interior of the Malibu is new. That is the difference. IFCAR (talk) 19:39, 1 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
A full redesign, which it is, counts as a new generation. Of course there were interior changes as well. Even if the platform didn't change, it would still be a new generation because of that. --Vossanova o< 14:34, 2 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Correct nomenclatures

[edit]

Just for the record. The 1964-77 is not a Chevrolet Malibu, but rather a Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu. So technically speaking, the First Generation Chevrolet Malibu would be stating @ 1978 and on.

1964 - 1977

  • Chevrolet Chevelle 300
  • Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu
  • Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396
  • and so on...

1978 - 1983

  • Chevrolet Malibu

1997 - Present

  • Chevrolet Malibu

Which Malibus are assembled where?

It would be helpful to explain where each type of Malibu is assebled. This information could help explain why only the gas models are on the UAW do-buy list, not the hybrids. r3 (talk) 21:08, 20 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

5th generation Classic model production dates?

[edit]

I see it says the regular model was from October 1996–2003 but the Classic was sold to rental fleets in 2004 and 2005 so I doubt Chevrolet would have made 2005 model year cars in 2003 even if it was late in the model year so does anyone know when the classic was in production Lunacats (talk) 12:08, 11 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

2024 Malibu discontinuation

[edit]

On May 8th, 2024 Chevrolet announced that the Malibu would be discontinued. More specifically, production is planned to end in November 2024 and the car is still currently in production (present). It is inaccurate to say that production ends in '2024' since that would indicate that production has already ended, which is currently not the case. The production end date can be modified away from 'present' once production stops for the final time. Needlesballoon (talk) 23:58, 12 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
