Population

[edit]

i think the chinese jamaican population is much larger than that. including the thousands that live outside of jamaica like america the uk and canada. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.19.12.199 (talk) 22:31, 23 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The 55,000 is only referring to the number of Chinese Jamaicans living in Jamaica, according to the Jamaican census from 2000. It would be hard to determine how many live overseas. Blackjays1 06:05, 29 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I just noticed a mistake and corrected it. I came up with the number 55,000 from the Demographics of Jamaica page. The total population of Jamaica was estimated as 2,750,000 and the percentage of Chinese Jamaicans was estimated as 0.2%. I multiplied 2,750,000 by 0.02, but 0.02 = 2.0%, not 0.2%. So I corrected the number by moving the decimal down, so the real number is around 5500. I know the number seems small, but stats are stats. Blackjays1 (talk) 01:30, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Other estimates of the Chinese population in Jamaica also give numbers in the thousands or low tens of thousands. E.g. [1], which lists various estimates ranging from 5,000 to 22,500 for Jamaica. Alternatively [2] gives the census data up to 1991 for Chinese people in Jamaica; the final figure, listed for 1991, is 5,372. I don't see any evidence for numbers like 55,000 or 70,000. cab (call) 06:48, 28 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There are far more significant Chinese-Jamaicans in reggae music than those listed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.98.80.38 (talk) 21:20, 17 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Note

[edit]

I have added England for two reasons. 1.Jamacia,Hong kong and guyhana were at one point in time apart of the United kingdom. and thus it is almost that their is not some sort Jamaican-Chinese minority. 2.Their is a large Jamaican minority in the country, bound to bare some sort of Jamaican heritage — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.148.51.65 (talk) 23:36, 12 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Interethnic Relations

[edit]

Care must be taken in how "ethnicities" are "termed." For instance, in the sentence "[T]he Chinese establishment of grocery shops throughout Jamaica had provoked concern amongst whites and Jamaicans as early as 1911," the use of "Jamaicans" can be misleading and less than factual. Point being, who would be referred to as "Jamaicans" in 1911 especially as juxtaposed by the use of the term "whites" and Chinese. CeeB (talk) 16:08, 9 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
