Are they gay?

[edit]

Are they gay? I mean, seriously.

In one word? Yesn't. They will never be officially labelled as gay by disney. This doesn't mean too much, though. The shareholders of Disney want to maintain their popularity in other less accepting countries, so they tell the writers not to label anything as gay, and the writers say OK and turn around and make the characters as gay as possible without calling them gay. That has happened in other corporations too, like Flick and CJ from Animal Crossings. What is also important to note is that Chip and Dale were created at-for lack of a better word-straighter time. While they might not have been gay at the time, they could easily have become gay depending on who was writing them. My most promising evidence is the rescue riders movie. (!SPOILERS ALERT!) If you take every time either chip or dale says friend and replace it with boyfriend, it immedeatley becomes a gay romance movie with an unnessary amount of external references. At the part where they have just fallen out of a sewer and Chip thinks Dale is dead, Dale becomes the nieve one while unaware that Chip is still mad. It is even a part of the movie that they have great chemistry. Further proving, Chip would clearly leave anytime he could. The only thing stopping him is Dale, who Chip pretends to hate how he acts while secretly missing an old potential crush/boyfriend.

Seriously, as in a serious discussion? Well, let's see. In the Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers series, they were portrayed as best friends and roommates. They were both romantically interested in Gadget, and somewhat antagonistic toward each other. If they were bisexual lovers, it would have been a rocky relationship at best. There is almost certainly fanfiction that portrays them as such, but such relationships are usually not supported by the canon, or by the copyright holder. BlueNight 21:49, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'd go with that. Even before Rescue Rangers they were portrayed as fighting over women, or the chipmunk equivalent thereof, on occasion. I remember there was one where they both tried to woo a nightclub singer. (In an episode of Mouseterpiece Theater George Plimpton indicated they were named after the Somen "Steve" Banerjee's "Chippendale" nightclub, but that was likely a joke) Now when it comes to the Goofy Gophers being gay that's a whole other issue. On that one I just don't know.--T. Anthony 16:19, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If you ask me, they seem to act a lot more like brothers than anything else. --UsaSatsui 03:33, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
There's no definite proof of that since the behaviour from their cartoons was from a time when gay still meant happy, and homosexual behaviour was unexplored and assumed to be any act of sodomy. There is one quote in the cartoon when Chip looks at himself in the mirror and can hear his inner monologue say (in a smooth voice) "You gay dog, you!". The quote was removed years ago from the cartoon, maybe because Disney didn't want to create a controversy over the boys orientation (though that same cartoon casts enough doubt on that idea). Rescue Rangers didn't give any indication either. If anything, in "Two Chips and a Miss" they accidentally kiss each other but laugh it off (mostly due to the presence of their sweatheart I think), and in "Gadgt Goes Hawaiian" they respond rather disgusted upon making the same mistake again. This is not to say they can't be gay however. -- CD 00:18, 25 November 2006
In the very early cartoons I used to think that Chip was a woman and Dale was her husband. (205.250.167.76 04:39, 18 March 2007 (UTC))[reply]
Never mind, but concerning the entry above the last one, that may have been because Disney's been in enough trouble with evangelical Christians over gay-friendly policies as it is. WAVY 10 18:46, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You know I remember some gay group claiming Bugs Bunny was gay or LGBT of some sort. In some cartoons he jokingly has a lisp, talks about manicures, or even wears women's clothing. (Those things were generally seen as LGBT for that era) Rush Limbaugh made a big thing of that and it's mentioned at their talk page.--T. Anthony 14:24, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Heck, I think you'd have a stronger case to indict Bugs than these guys? WAVY 10 16:44, 8 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
They're BROTHERS! Disney wouldn't make their characters gay! 24.151.137.19 (talk) 23:31, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Chip and Dale's creator, Bill Justice, confirmed in his autobiography Justice for Disney (1992) that Chip and Dale are "simply little brothers". 2600:1700:2210:C710:63AF:3C28:6859:75BE (talk) 19:56, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

They are not gay and there is no solid proof they are gay. Kaleeb18 (talk) 17:46, 18 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

In "Out of Scale" Dale comes out of the house wearing a feminine-looking scarf on his head and beating dust out a rug, and Donald comments, "well what do you know!" at this wifely behavior. In the same episode they sleep in the same bed spooning.

[edit]

On the article page there a link in the section "Two Chips and a Miss" named Clarice, after the character in the cartoon. Yet, it leads to an article about a reindeer instead. I don't think chipmunks should be confused for reindeer. And I know the character myself. If there is no page for Clarice that is appropriate, I'd suggest that her name remains texts. And to prevent confusion to readers.

There are many bad links on Wikipedia. People take for granted that links would be helpful, instead of checking out if they're really linking to the correct article... 惑乱 分からん 15:48, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Title

[edit]

The references all concur on

  • Chip 'n' Dale

rather than the current

  • Chip 'n Dale

(which, BTW, uses an illogical spelling of the single letter contraction of "and"). Two variants that at least one confirms are

  • Chip an' Dale
  • Chip and Dale

which i'll add to the text, along with renaming the page.
--Jerzyt 06:03, 23 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, however Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers's refs are united on that spelling. Perhaps this calls for a decent interval in which justifications could be offered for the status quo.
--Jerzyt 06:30, 23 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
For what it's worth, most references to the "classic" Chip and Dale cartoons (non-rescue ranger) use the "Chip 'n' Dale" form (including the title cards for the classic animated shorts under the Chip 'n' Dale series). While "Chip 'n Dale" is usually seen when referencing the Rescue Rangers cartoon (as seen in the CDRR logo), the model sheets for Chip and Dale used for Rescue Rangers have "Chip 'n' Dale" printed on them. It seems even Disney isn't always unified on which form is correct. Duckyass 05:09, 13 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The decent interval has passed (over three years) and no justifications for the status quo have been offered. I just checked out posters for 15 of the 23 of shorts where they star, and their names are only included three times, once as "Chip an' Dale" (in Chip an' Dale, 1947), once as "Chip n' Dale" (yet another variant, in Working for Peanuts, 1953), and once as "Chip 'n' Dale" (in The Lone Chipmunks, 1954). So no evidence to support "Chip 'n Dale there. I'm going to request a move to "Chip 'n' Dale" because:

  • The shorts always use it for title cards (as noted above).
  • There is inconsistency among posters for the shorts, but none use "Chip 'n Dale".
  • IMO the name used on the shorts should take precedence over the name used on Rescue Rangers, because that's the original source of the name.
  • In any case, the name used on Rescue Rangers is at least to some extent inconsistent as well (as noted above).
  • The "Chip 'n' Dale" form is a logical contraction of "Chip and Dale" while "Chip 'n Dale" is not (as noted above).

Which part of WP:NOT was this section violating? I thought the alternate names list was relevant, noteworthy, and interesting. D.W. Aley 21:21, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It probably fits best under Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not#Wikipedia is not a dictionary. This also is the English Wikipedia, there are interwiki links if people want to see a foreign name. Also this material has already been deleted before, see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of Disney characters' names in various languages Garion96 (talk) 21:53, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Two Forums of Information

[edit]

For those who are unfamiliar with the background information behind the Chip n Dale franchaise there are in fact two main websites that house most of the information behind this franchise. These are The Acorn Cafe, and Chip And Dale Online. The Acorn Cafe does focus more heavily on the Rescue Rangers and in that may be better put on the Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers wiki page. However in that that page has had the link to the Acorn Cafe repeatedly deleted I believe for completeness sake both Chip and Dale Online and The Acorn Cafe ought to be represented with a link in this article. If it is determined that the Acorn Cafe should instead be linked on the Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers article then that makes sense and seems to be a good idea but in leiu of that the link ought to be on the normal Chip n Dale article it seems to me. Please tell me the reasoning against this as I am confused by the repeated attempts to delete any link to an important site for information about the topic in the article. Thanks

After looking at both links, it seems that while Chip and Dale Online is an informative website specifically relating to the Chip 'n' Dale cartoons, The Acorn Cafe is a message forum specifically relating to the Rescue Rangers. Putting a link to The Acorn Cafe on here seems like putting a link to a "The Phantom Menace" fansite on the Wikipedia article about Luke Skywalker.
Chip 'n Dale Online being linked while The Acorn Cafe is not could be due in part to The Acorn Cafe being just a message board while Chip 'n Dale Online includes a rather thorough history section covering most, if not all, of the classic shorts. Were it also just a message board, I think it would be hard to justify either site having a link.
Fair enough, and that makes sense. Thank you for the reasoning.

This probably also goes back to Wikipedia's nonsensical policy about fandoms being "non-noteworthy", as well. Oh well.74.255.70.193 (talk) 18:37, 8 March 2009 (UTC)R3[reply]

Twins?

[edit]

The page is included in the "Fictional Twins" category, but I'm not sure that's valid. I don't recall seeing anything to indicate that they were twins. Brothers, sure, perhaps even litter-mates (chipmunks do have 4-5 babies at a time after all - not to get all sciency about it or anything) but I was pretty sure that Chip is meant to be slightly older. If they are indeed twins, it would be an unusual exception to the usual rules regarding fictional twins - which are almost universally either identical twins (of like genders by definition), or fraternal twins of opposite genders. There are almost no depictions anywhere of fraternal twins of the same gender. (And Chip and Dale are certainly not identical, at least with the exception of their very first few appearances.) Lurlock (talk) 05:32, 18 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

According to the episode short "The Lone Chipmunks", Dale says Chip is his best friend. They do act and stick close together a lot like twin brothers which is a bit unusual for best friends. No mention of any relatives comes in any of those shorts. I'm not sure if their relational status has changed in Rescue Rangers, nor am I sure if Disney has made it clear that they are friends or twin brothers. That ambiguous question certainly has been pending for a while. Deltasim (talk) 05:59, 18 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I'm aware, there have been no indications that Chip and Dale are related, let alone brothers. Any such categorization is pure speculation. Powers T 13:59, 18 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
In The ARK meet Chip'n'Dale, they are looking from the heritage from a relative; in Dull Kinda Danger, they go visit their grandfather (then, they are, or brothers, or cousins)--95.93.124.250 (talk) 02:16, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Oversight of continuity in the comics was perfunctory at best, though I admit it fits the criteria for an indication that they're related. =) Obviously not enough to keep them in Category:Fictional twins, though. Powers T 14:40, 21 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
According to Walt Disney Comics and Stories Edition #214, in the Chip 'n' Dale section it is Dale's birthday. Since Chip's birthday does not to take place on the same day and section, this is concrete evidence that they are not twins or brothers. Being related however is another matter. Chip 'n DaleChip 'n' Dale — Many forms such as "Chip 'n' Dale", "Chip 'n Dale", "Chip n' Dale", "Chip an' Dale" are used in different short films and series. The original source of the name is the shorts, where they never use "Chip 'n Dale" but use "Chip 'n' Dale" exclusively on the title cards. Voices

[edit]

I think there should be a section about the voices. It should include how they were done and if they were the first 'high pitch' cartoon character voices or copied from some other source. I believe that "Witch Doctor" and "Purple People Eater" may be presumed to have got there voice idea from Chip 'n' Dale. agb — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.233.167.122 (talk) 18:58, 27 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Changes by 104.235.116.129

[edit]

I have just reverted a large number of good faith edits by User:104.235.116.129. There were a number of issues about these changes that I'll address below;

  • "Year Period" - What does this mean? What source is being used for them?
  • "Age Era" column. What does this mean? What source is being used for them?
  • Change of "Release date" to "Air date". What is meant by "Air date"? These differ from the release dates on the individual articles about each film. If the dates in the article are incorrect, please cite the source of these new dates so that we can see.
  • "Distributor" and "Distribution talk" columns that mostly repeats themselves in every row. I don't see what these verbose columns are adding to the table, except to repeat the "Author" column and mention "Walt Disney" on every row.
  • "Deaths Before And After" column. What is the point of this confusing column? If it indicates who is voicing the characters, it would be much clearer to have a "Voices" column, rather than describing at length when the actors died in every row.

Canine Teeth

[edit]

The article currently states: "Dale has a larger, dark red nose and it is his canine teeth that are exposed." It initially struck me as odd that they were referred to as canine teeth since they are so square, and looking over at the Rodent page, at least scientifically, rodents do not have canine teeth. Is there any sort of canon material saying that Dale has canine teeth? Otherwise, perhaps this could be described differently? Ritabuuk (talk) 05:48, 9 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
