Better Picture

This picture isn't a great shot. It doesn't show his face, only his profile. So can somebody replace it with a better photograph? It is a little difficult to find a good headshot of the guy, so if anyone can do better, here's my suggestion - http://library.thinkquest.org/J003248F/images/chipper2.jpg

It looks a little bit older, but I think it is better than the current one up.

I'm not exactly sure how to link and credit it, so if someone could help me there, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Chipper and Texas

Actually, Chipper Jones owns a ranch in Texas, which is where I assume he lives in the off-season. I've seen a piece on him hunting on his ranch. You're right that it's not mentioned in the text, but I'm surprised Google didn't turn anything up. I don't think it's worth the Texas project tag, but I'll see if I can find a source on him living in Texas for the text. - BillCJ 15:53, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

Hey Bill, read the "279,000" hits -- most of them just happen to have Chipper Jones and Texas on the same page (Chipper Jones New York gives me 386,000 hits and he is definitely not from there!). Still, you are correct -- there are more mentions of his Texas ranch than I originally noted. Even so, he is definitely not a "person from Texas" and certainly doesn't belong in the Texas Wikiproject, but it's clear he does have a relationship with the place that could potentially be added to this article in the text. Thanks for the correction. --SuperNova |T|C| 19:07, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

I never said it was clear, just that Google had 279,000 hits! I agree he is not "from" Texas, and I did state earler that I didn't think his ranch made him worthy of the Texas Project tag. However, the Texas project may define Texans fairly broadly, but I haven't checked, and probably won't. I'm leaving it up to whoever added the project tag to give a compelling reason for including it here. I mainly included the Goggle search page so you could check out the Ranch articles, as there were several. Maybe we can come up with a relevant item to include in the text, and link to a couple of the better articles so readers who are interested can read further. - BillCJ 19:32, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

Citation re 1999 World Series HR

Not difficult to find. I'd guess most Braves fans remember it, but if a link is need to the facts here it is:

CNN/SI 1999 World Series Toneboy 09:54, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

  • Uh, Chipper's only home run in the series, off Hernández is not mentioned in that article. I tried several links on that page and couldn't find anything that states that. -Fnlayson 07:07, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

More clear-cut verification

Sorry, it takes a bit of work to put it all together from game recaps and box scores. I hope this is a bit more simple. If you combine this from Baseball Reference and this from retrosheet. They combine to show Chipper's game one HR was the only one the Braves hit in the series, and that he hit it off Orlando Hernandez. (Toneboy 16:02, 24 June 2007 (UTC))

  • Thanks. Didn't doubt it happened. I don't remember the details well enough. I was looking for 1 web page to use as a reference. I think this one will do it with the game summary and composite stats. Baseball almanac 1999 World Series -Fnlayson 16:20, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
    • Knew there was a site with all that info on the one page, couldn't remember the URL! Nice find. Incidentally the ranch mentioned further up the page is called Double Dime Ranch, but reading over it seems to be somewhat of a business project, so whether links to it should be included is a matter for someone else to debate. Gold Glove

Just a quick note about my last edit. While one MLB.com page said Chipper won his 5th straight Gold Glove in 2003, another on the site says Scott Rolen was his 5th award (in 6 tries) that year. Wikipedia agrees. Plus, Chipper didn't even play third during some of those years... and he's never been that great of a fielder to begin with (which is why little was lost moving him to LF). So I've re-removed that statement. --SuperNova |T|C| 20:09, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

  • He moved to other positions to make room for better 3rd basemen (Penetelton in '96 and Castilla in '02+). He played SS after they got Penetelton. He's not great at 3rd, but is fairly reliable. -Fnlayson 20:25, 10 August 2007 (UTC)
Thaaks for checking it out, SN. I really had no idea where else to look. I've learned not to tak the word of IP users on this, esp when they contradict a verifiable source without another source. In this case, they were right, but I've seen plenty here that weren't right! - BillCJ 23:47, 10 August 2007 (UTC)
I think you did exactly the right thing, Bill; I probably would've done the same. I just couldn't believe that Chipper had won five Gold Gloves without me noticing, so I thought I'd check it out further. --SuperNova |T|C| 03:01, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

Personal Life

Is it just me, or does the story under the "personal life" section make no sense at all? Huphelmeyer 04:27, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

What in particular are you referring to? There are three separate threads there. - BillCJ 05:10, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
The "of his father" was missing. I've restored a version of the paragraph from late August, back before the Garden City vandals hit the page. There may be more left in other places on the page, as they seemed to do alot of "sneaky" vandalism. - BillCJ 05:29, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

Range Factor

BillCJ had RVd my insertion of a reference to the fact that CJ's range factor was the major league worst in a particular year. His reasons: "unsourced, no apparent relevance." I have reinserted it, with a footnote to the relevant ESPN site. This, despite the fact that it is clear convention that where the relevant stat sites are listed in ELs, we do not have a need to provide such footnotes. As to the "no apparent relevance" statement, I would imagine that if one is interested in CJ's performance as a baseball player -- including his performance as a third basemen, which is something the following paragraph discusses -- it might seem somewhat self-evident what the "apparent relevance" is.--Epeefleche 05:21, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

Fine. Per Fnlayson's research, I take back the unsources and irrelevant part, and replace it with "incorrect". Is that better? Btw, if it relates to the following paragraph, why is it stuck by itself before the paragraph? - BillCJ 05:48, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
  • Epeefleche provided the link. I just corrected some wording. He was worst on the qualified list at 3rd for that year, but that was only 17th out of 30 ML teams. -Fnlayson 06:00, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
Well, I actually thought that I had provided you with the precise EL, which was available to you already in the ELs on the page. No real reason for that, any more than in providing citations for all of the other stats in the article, but better than avoiding silly discussions -- there you are. Now that you take back the unsourced and irrelevant language, I'll address the "incorrect" language. It's no more incorrect that to say that Mauer had the highest batting average in the AL last year. Of course the caveat is that that relates to those who qualified for the batting title. I would think it odd for you to go through wikipedia modifying all those entries according to your felt need for further specificity. But, given that your leaning is in that direction, we'll accommodate your needs here. It relates only indirectly to the following para, which of course concerns the follwing year and hence sits nicely as a para unto itself. But the main point is that fielding performance is relevant, just as hitting performance is, and the following para relates to fielding performance, and to events of the following year. Not sure what your delete was all about.--Epeefleche 06:37, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
I watch this artuicle because it attracts alot of vandalism from ignorant Mets fans, and from other editors who thinks it's their job to "balance" coverage by loading the article with every negeative thing they can find. If I went overboard in your case, I'm sorry. But I am a good editor, and I'm going to keep doing what I do. Btw, when you work on a sentence with a {{fact}} from Febuary, you should provide a source or remove it, not add to it. - BillCJ 07:16, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
I'm a baseball fan. I'll support anyone who makes appropriate edits. I've no reason to highlight solely a ballplayer's positive or negative accomplishments; I tend to think that both are noteworthy. I'll leave it to you to delete material wiht fact tags -- I don't do that myself unless I spend time googling to determine whether I can support the material or not. Here, I preferred to spend time improving the article in other ways. Though it was odd how many comments there were that were subjective in nature, which no one had tagged or bothered to support. Clearly there is a lot more that can be said -- if you have the time, check out CJ's stats against all pitchers, where he has at least 30 at bats. He has had uncommon success against Randy Johnson. Properly presented, that seems to be me be something that you might want to reflect if you have the time.--Epeefleche 07:56, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

I agree with the presence of the range factor stat, but someone should incorporate it into a paragraph rather than having it as one separate line at the beginning of a section.►Chris Nelson 08:02, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

Tx. Done.--Epeefleche 09:36, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

How about we don't use it because range factor is an awful statistic that is indicative of nothing? Jones may or may not be a poor third baseman, but range factor discusses the total number of plays made by a player, and says nothing of the percentage of plays made by the player. Maybe Zone Rating would be a better choice. --TheyCallMeBruce 01:12, 19 September 2009 (UTC)

pics

damn chris, have you been takin pics lately? i saw those andruw ones..nice.

I went to the game today so I got a lot of Dodgers and Braves pics. My favorite is Image:Russell_Martin3.jpg.►Chris NelsonHolla! 03:28, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
For future reference though, you might want to make a comment like this on my talk page. Some people get pretty annoyed when "forum-like" posts are made to talk pages.►Chris NelsonHolla! 03:29, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

Nickname origin

In the beginning of the article it says he got the nickname "Chipper" from eating chips from the Lay's factory that his uncle worked at. In the personal life section of the article it says he got the nickname because his family thought he was a 'chip off the old block'. Which one is it? Neither claim has a source. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.17.57.182 (talk) 07:30, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

Stats

i updated some stats, taken right from the braves website. for some odd reason, the number of games played for chipper was way off. someone had put 1,985.. when in actuality he's only played in 1911.. i also updated his career BA, OBP, SLG, BB and RBI totals. Enjoisktboarding2 (talk) 19:45, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

Chipper was drafted by Bobby Cox, not Schuerholz, per Chipper's website and lots of other sources (here is one article). John Schuerholz wasn't hired by the Braves until October 10, 1990. Tigger101023 (talk) 02:56, 19 June 2008 (UTC)
