How'd he get the name Rafferty?[edit]

The article says he was born with the name John Goffage, and got his nickname "Chips" as a boy. Nothing is said about where he got the name "Rafferty". I assume it's a stage name, but the article doesn't say. Eastcote (talk) 16:30, 1 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Also why is his wife called 'Quentin'? Surely this is never used as a girl's name? Spiderone 21:38, 1 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Not often, admittedly. But have you not heard of Quentin Bryce, since 2008 the first woman Governor-General of Australia? -- ♬ Jack of Oz[your turn] 21:46, 1 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How’d he get the name Chips?[edit]

There must be a story for why “Chips”.

Lots of Google finds say he got it at school. None (I can see) say why.

Real name, John Goffage; took his screen name when his first film role in 1938 called for an Irishman. It was his improvement on the producer's suggestion of Slabs O'Flaherty. [1]

Chauvel changed his [Chips’] name to the more larrikin-sounding Rafferty and promoted him as a new star. [2]
