Methyl mercury

"Between 1932 and 1968, Chisso's chemical factory in Minamata released large quantities of industrial wastewater that was contaminated with highly toxic methylmercury." The Chisso factory's effluent was contaminated with inorganic mercury used to catalyze the reaction forming acetaldehyde from ethylene. For a long time Chisso evaded responsibility on the grounds that Minamata disease was caused by organic mercury (methylmercury) which they were not discharging. It was the discovery, by Gunnel Westöö, that bacteria in the sediment could reduce inorganic mercury (II) to organic mercury (0) that provided the link between the disease and the discharge. No mention of Silicon production?
