Speedy contested

[edit]

Per WP:ATHLETE, as I recall, pro athletes in the first tier are inherently notable. I'm pretty sure this guy started at least one game for the Steelers, so de facto he's notable. --AndrewHowse (talk) 15:21, 29 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Note from Wikipedia:Notability (people) that "meeting one or more [of the critera such as WP:ATHLETE] does not guarantee that a subject should be included", and that "if the depth of coverage is not substantial, then multiple independent sources may be needed to prove notability; trivial coverage of a subject by secondary sources may not be sufficient to establish notability." Therefore if you could find a reference that mentions him in addition to that stats page I would be happy to keep this article.Pontificalibus (talk) 15:34, 29 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
A7 seems to deal with articles about people who do not make an assertion of notability. Under WP:ATHLETE, an assertion of notability has been clearly made, so I cannot see that this article can be speedied, at least under A7.
I agree with Pontificalibus in that WP:ATHLETE is not an absolute, it is a generally accepted guideline based on longstanding community consensus. If this goes to AfD, my suspicion is that the article will be supported for inclusion.
The article, as is, requires expansion and continued sourcing. I would be concerned that no where in the deletion debate is there any discussion about a continued look for sources. In general, while it is up to the individual editor to provide references for any material, prior to deletion there is at least a cursory check for resources. I've declined this speedy as notability has been asserted. If someone wants to argue this at AFD thats a different matter, but I really don't think it would be right for one admin to make an exception to WP:ATHLETE as a speedy deletion. ϢereSpielChequers 18:54, 29 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
