ALT1: ... that Jeff Bezos attended a meeting where Amazon’s general counsel presented a plan to smear Amazon Labor Union founder Chris Smalls as “not smart or articulate”? Thriley (talk) 07:55, 25 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Thriley: That hook highlights Jeff Bezos and racism against Smalls, rather than the work he is doing. SquareInARoundHole (talk) 16:18, 25 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I think it would be good to detail the deliberate efforts Amazon has taken to stop his effort. They have gone pretty low. Thriley (talk) 17:30, 25 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Thriley: It is in the article. You might want to look that over and make some edits there if you feel it's not adequately highlighted. SquareInARoundHole (talk) 19:07, 25 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not really sure if ALT1 would fly. ALT1 sounds like a BLP violation to me (especially with the "smear" wording), and DYK guidelines discourage highlighting negative aspects about living people. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 12:36, 3 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I didn’t make the alt to disparage Smalls. I thought a hook detailing one of the many things Amazon has done in order to stop him might be more interesting than just a simple fact about his organizing work. Thriley (talk) 02:20, 4 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I was referring to Bezos in my comment and not Smalls. Regardless of our thoughts on Bezos, having a hook like that about him seems to unduly portray him in a negative light. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 03:30, 4 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

ALT2: ... that Chris Smalls, who founded the Amazon Labor Union in 2021, was once a rapper and briefly toured with Meek Mill? Overall: Approve Alt 2 --evrik (talk) 04:28, 28 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Evrik: can you consider this one?

I think it would be better to focus on his actual work and not a minor fact about him, which feels like it’s minimizing him. Thriley (talk) 04:43, 28 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

What about this Alt4?--evrik (talk) 14:13, 28 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Don't care for ALT4, since his founding of the labor union is probably is largest accomplishment, and would love it to contain both.

Also, disagree ALT2 was minimizing. Founding the labor union and a fun fact about his history is quite hooky without minimizing the work he's doing.

ALT5: ... that Amazon Labor Union founder Chris Smalls is one of the leaders in an effort to unionize Amazon warehouse workers?
SquareInARoundHole (talk) 18:53, 28 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • The Staten Island warehouse voted to unionize. Here’s a hook that reflects that:
ALT6: ... that Amazon Labor Union founder Chris Smalls was one of the leaders in the first successful effort to unionize Amazon warehouse workers? Source: The New York Times Thriley (talk) 18:45, 1 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Love the addition of the photo. SquareInARoundHole (talk) 20:46, 1 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I second that. Really great work. Thriley (talk) 20:48, 1 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@SquareInARoundHole: What do you think about ALT6? I think it is important for the vote to be mentioned. Thriley (talk) 20:51, 1 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Thriley: I like ALT6. Let's go with that one considering the day they've had today. SquareInARoundHole (talk) 20:53, 1 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Making two notes here. First, I am approving the image for the main page as it is freely licenced, used in the article and of high-enough quality for main page. Second, when checking the source for ALT6, I noticed that the NYT source continuously says that this is the first union of Amazon workers in the United States. ALT6 doesn't mention the United States, so the hook might not be accurate, as there might be Amazon unions in other countries. I suggest the following ALT below:
@Evrik, SquareInARoundHole, and Thriley: thoughts on ALT6A? Evrik, could you re-add a green tick if everything works for you, so that promoters know that this is ready? Thanks everyone. Z1720 (talk) 16:56, 3 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good to me. Thanks for the hook. Thriley (talk) 16:59, 3 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
