Explo '72 Attendance

[edit]

Numbers for the final festival are quite diverse, to say the least; they are summarised below by publication date.

Publication Date Attendance reported
Christianity Today 1972-04-04** 250,000
Life 1972-06-30 150,000
Christianity Today 1972-07-07 120,000 - 180,000
CCM 1982-04 180,000
Christian Life 1972-08 180,000 - 300,000
CCM 1988-06 180,000
Raised by Wolves (Thompson) 2000 250,000
ECCM (Powell) 2002 250,000

So here's the deal: Many sources published recently (which are otherwise reliable) use the 250,000 number when naming attendance at Explo. The trouble with using the 250,000 number for Explo attendance is that it was published prior to event taking place, as expected or hoped for crowd. Most of the numbers published following the event are smaller, the exception that I found being Christian Life, whose reporting allowed for a number range so wide as to be unuseable in practical terms. It is also significant that Christianity Today later published numbers that indicate attendance in a smaller range. Therefere, in my opinion, the 250,000 number is suspect and a smaller number is likely more representive of the actual crowd. Dan, the CowMan (talk)
