Entry evaluation[edit]

This entry contains information about the Botany Bay diamond beetle regarding its taxonomy, initial discovery, description, distribution and habitat, life cycle, and ecology. A unique strength of this entry is it provides detailed information about the discovery of this beetle that I didn’t notice in the other entries I read. One interesting fact I learned from this section is that this beetle was one of only 5 insects collected on James Cook’s voyage to Australia. This entry also does a good job of providing many pictures and has well-written prose. This entry would be strengthened by including other topics such as human interactions and conservation efforts.

Regarding the behavior of this beetle, the entry includes content about its life cycle, diet, and habitat. For example, the beetle lives in southern Australia and is active both in the daytime and nighttime, feeds on ''Acacia'', and lays eggs next to ''Acacia'' plant stems. One behavioral topic that could be included is predation threats to this beetle. It would be interesting to learn how other organisms impact these beetles and their defense behaviors. A second topic that can be included is their mating behavior. This would be important to understand adult social behavior with other beetles when trying to find mates. Third, a section about parasites would be beneficial and would provide more information about how this beetle interacts with other organisms and reveal survival behaviors.

In the talk section, I noticed this entry received a B grade, which makes sense to me. Although this entry contains a great amount of useful content about the Botany Bay diamond beetles, it could leave serious students or researchers wanting to know more about conservation efforts and their behavior. This beetle was also rated low-importance which makes sense since there are no concerning factors about it that have yet to be reported in this entry.
