Moving Ciclovia to Ciclovía

[edit]

Anyone have a problem with me moving this page to Ciclovía? I'm pretty sure Ciclovia and Cycleway in Bogota should redirect to Ciclovía.--Fisherjs 14:26, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Good question. I particularly prefer Ciclovía, but some people may object that this, being the English Wikipedia, should avoid non-English accents and characters. You may have seen the discussion that user Tequendamia started in my talk page because I changed links from Bogota and Medellin to Bogotá and Medellín. I stand behind my opinion, but in that case I'm backed by the major English dictionaries and encyclopedias. In this case, neither ciclovía nor ciclovia are currently English words, so I'm not so convinced. But in my personal opinion we should leave the original, Spanish spelling: ciclovía. 132.192.14.232 01:16, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Fisherjs,

You're right, I know nothing about Spanish, I'm a bicycle guy. I just did some massive editing on this article because I was looking up more info than what I had in this magazine and found the wikipedia entry had less. It had been that Ciclovia pointed to Cycleway in Bogata for some reason before. Anyways, I switched that around. In the process of doing some basic fact checking I discovered the Ciclovía spelling. I created that and the redirect. I was wondering about that being the proper entry and moving the article again (originally it was cycleways...) But I didn't because I wondered about the policy on unusual characters. I'm pretty new to wikipedia, I actually just learned how to do a redirect for this article. So anyways, I'll support whatever you think. It seems to me the proper spelling is with the accent. However, since both will end up in the same place I don't think it matters a lot. Also if you know specifics about columbia or other places which host this about there please add them. I left the whole article kind of preliminary since i don't really know where to get more info.

I'm keen on this issue because I wish we could have ciclovía here in Vancouver, BC. ~user:rusl

Car-free does not mean Anti-car

[edit]

Unlike true anti-car organisations such as reclaim the streets this is a mainstream scheme organised by government, and its purpose is to promote more cycling, not to oppose the automobile outright. After all, cars are still allowed on the road 6 days a week and the cycle paths are conceived in addition to roads and not as a replacement. I will remove the "anti-car" category. The complete story about the origin of ciclovia in Colombia

[edit]

Note: this story is true. It's my own experience. In preparation for the 6th Pan American games held in 1971 in Cali, the national bicycle team chose Medellin for practicing and briefings purpose. Specifically a circuit formed by the streets surrounding the campus of the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana, then called the Bolivariana circuit, was converted in a improvised bike track. The national team would attract a large number of spectators during this practices, specially youngster of the surroundings neighborhoods. A couple of weeks later, after the national team left the city, on Sunday's or holidays, local bicycle teams would continue to use this circuit for competition or practices. It was done with the permission of local authorities. Once again a large public would be present. Later a second circuit was created, the so called Avenida El Poblado circuit. It's from here that the media began to refer to both circuits as Ciclovia. If on a Sunday or holiday there wasn't no competition or practice programmed. The would be spectators would illegally block the streets to make it car free and practice their preferred sport: running, biking, soccer or skating. Although blocking the streets was illegal, it was tolerated by the police( not always). In 1976 Mr. Jaime Ortiz, after learning about the "illegal ciclovias" of Medellin, began promoting this idea in Bogota. He achieved the acceptance and therefore the legal status of the ciclovia with the Bogota authorities. Fact that didn't happened in Medellin but many years later, due to the lack of interest of city authorities. That's the reason why Bogota is credited as the city of origin of the ciclovia. The word ciclovia remained, but the concept of bike track changed for what it's known today: a car free recreational event. (Aferhoe (talk) 01:15, 17 April 2014 (UTC))[reply]
