Oracle[edit]

Should I relink the oracle from Oracle to Delphic Sibyl? Seems more accurate. Craig Sniffen 03:08, 8 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, I think it should be Pythia if the aim is accuracy in the sense of how a word is used rather than the actual word. Note that

The Delphic Sibyl was not involved in the operation of the Delphic Oracle and should be considered distinct from the Pythia, the priestess of Apollo.

Reference to Eternal War savegame and media impact[edit]

Lately there has been a lot of references to Civ II's playtrough by a reddit user which managed to play the game for over 10 years there is not only a subreddit discussing this topic but also many media references that can be found there http://www.reddit.com/r/theeternalwar/ and even CNN has an article about it http://edition.cnn.com/2012/06/18/tech/gaming-gadgets/civilization-ii-ten-years/index.html should it be mentioned ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 190.230.80.234 (talk) 17:30, 18 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Cruise missiles[edit]

"Attack strength of the cruise missile has been decreased"

I don't believe Civ I had cruise missiles...

Good point. Also, the links to the units, improvements and techs go to other wikipedia entries. These have no information on the meaning of the terms as it applies to the game. Shouldn't the links simply go to a Civ page describing the units, etc.? -- Aspie

No, the links describe the units as they are in the real world, which is useful. We don't have—and shouldn't have—articles on each of the Civ units. It would just cause clutter, and most would just be VfD'ed anyway. The links should stay as are.
Also, [[User::Aspie|Aspie]], sign your posts. I added your signature above, but you can do this by typing 3 or 4 tildes (~~~ or ~~~~). Peace. :-) Frecklefoot | Talk 14:07, Jun 3, 2005 (UTC)

Winning the Game in "Deity Mode" using Research[edit]

I posted a 3.25 page summary of how to win the game in "Deity Mode" without warfare. It was removed two minutes later by someone saying that is not what Wikipedia is for. Any suggestions are where to put something of that nature? The tips I presented are far better than anything I've ever come across on the intenet.

I was the user who reverted it. My reasoning is this: firstly, I believe it is against the policy stated on No Original Research. Secondly, since Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, tips and hints on how to play games don't belong here since they do not belong in an encyclopedia. This article should be about the game, not good ways on how to play it. :-) Akamad 02:07, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I suppose my comments could be viewed as original research. If anyone knows of an appropriate place to post them, within or outside of Wikipedia, please let me know.
I'd be happy to post this on my web site. Take a look at http://nicollsbooks.com/games/index.html and email me at Alan_Nicoll@yahoo.com if you'd like me to add your summary. Alan Nicoll 19:38, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I played this game on PlayStation to the point of addiction and then some. A quick estimate I just came up with shows that I've spent at least 1000 hours of my life playing it thus far, most of this during the summer of 1999. I actually cut up the CD to keep myself from playing it, but then got another copy in 2001. I cut up that one, and then bought I third copy in 2004, which I still have. Help me. I've defeated it in Deity several times, but I don't think I've ever done this with a spaceship.

Anyway, I would recommend putting it on your User Page. Captain Jackson 02:55, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Captain Jackson. I might do that. After posting here, I learned more about the game and realized that I was winning the game in Deity mode without warfare, without trading, and without "celebrating": the three common ways to help acheive a victory. I also learned that since my CD version is one of the earliest to be published, I do not enjoy as many benefits from celebrating (if I used it) as is available in later versions. I haven't played the game in a month and have been playing chess recently instead. I'm thankful that people are allowed to create pages in Wikipedia about chess strategy.

I think putting the tips right here on the discussion page sounds good.--Can Not 23:03, 20 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Windows Versions[edit]

What Windows versions were supported? I now it runs under 95+ but I saw a screenshot in the manual that had Windows 3.1 buttons, yet when I tried to run it on my Win 3.1 machine to test I was told I needed a newer version of Windows. Stovetopcookies 14:23, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, as I recall, it came out right in the time period where programs ran on both, so, yes, I do think it could run on Windows 3.1. Perhaps you needed to update some other file or something, such as WinG though. Or, looking at the my Civ 2 Gold edition, it only lists Windows 95 supported, so maybe the expansions needed 95? FrozenPurpleCube 17:58, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm pretty sure that my copy here (Civ 2 latest patch CD-ROM) has support for Windows 3.1. It's got the Win 3.1 style windows and stuff, plus I believe the readme mentioned Win 3.1 support. I know that it definitely doesn't support any version of DOS though.--Obeejw 04:17, 2 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Music genre and style[edit]

Would anyone be able to expand on my music section?. It'd be really good if someone could provide a bit more information on the actual songs, like their genre and relevance to the game or something like that?.--Obeejw 04:17, 2 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Civ2boxart.jpg[edit]

Image:Civ2boxart.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 18:43, 2 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Settlers & Engineers[edit]

The article states "For instance, engineers and settlers can be automated to improve surrounding areas". This simply isn't true in the original Civ2, it might be in future releases like ToT. 79.66.87.109 18:34, 15 August 2007 (UTC) Phil[reply]

Version 1.08 adds a much requested feature: Smart (or at least Automated) Settlers. Issue the "K" or "Automate Settlers" order to your settlers or engineers, and they will behave (for better or for worse) exactly as if the AI were controlling them, although they will not build cities. You can cancel the automate order the same way you cancel any order. Just click on the unit and/or selecting it on the unit popup.

Game modification section[edit]

Seems to be mostly composed of original research if not game-guidey material. Completely unreferenced as well. I suggest removing the section by compressing it into 1-2 sentences and adding it into another section of the article. Thoughts? DP76764 (Talk) 20:19, 24 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Seems reasonable to me. I reverted the deletion of it because it seemed like vandalism. (That IP blanked the whole page next, so it seems I guessed correctly.) But, yes, it does seem to mostly be OR. --GentlemanGhost (talk) 03:50, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Removed links[edit]

I recently tried to add a couple of External Links to websites/forums that cover Civilization 2 in some detail and I have noticed that they have been removed. I was wondering why this was? Had I broken one of Wikipedia's rules? I did notice some of the other external links were out of date and others were for forums (IE CivFanatics Civilization Forums) so I can't really tell what I did wrong. It has been suggested that as I am a moderator on one of the sites there is a conflict of interest. I am not employed by Apolyton and stand to gain no financial benefit. Civilization is merely my hobby :)

The first external link was to the Civilization 2 Scenario League forum hosted by Apolyton Civilization Site. This is one of the two main English language forums for Civ2 scenario creation. I wanted to add the link to the Civilization 2 page of Wikipedia to assist people who wanted advice about scenario creation or who wanted to play the scenarios (free of charge) created by members of the Scenario League.

The second external link was for the Civ2 - Multiplayer forum at Civilization Forum, a German Language Civ2 site. I am a member of the Multiplayer community there and it is one of the last places on the net where the multiplayer game is being played consistently.

The reason for adding the two links is that I would like to make it easier for Civilization 2 fans to find these two bastions of activity. I don't know if it is because I am personally involved in the sites that the links were removed but I can't really see anyone else adding them and I am doing it for the benefit of visitors to this page.

Sorry for the rambling explanation. Hopefully someone can shed some light on where I went wrong. Thanks

McMonkey McBean (talk) 22:20, 8 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You should read through the policy on external links (specifically ones to be avoided)for more information, but generally 'fan sites' (especially forums) are not acceptable links. And, since this is an English article, links to a German forum are also not particularly acceptable. Civ Fanatics is a bit of an exception to the rule, since it is a large, notable community. DP76764 (Talk) 22:34, 8 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the prompt reply!

I have read through the policy on external links and although I would like to argue my case I think there are several points which I am on the borderline with, so I won't waste your time. I fully accept your comment about the German site. Apolyton is already listed in the See Also section so hopefully fans of Civ2 can find our Scenario League Forum and Site through that link.

I have noticed that a couple of the external links are out of date though and could be removed:

'Civilized Online Gaming Community' - Link does not work. I think the site may no longer exist.

'CivFanatics Civilization Forums' - There is already a link to Civilization Fanatics Center in the 'See Also' section and it does not go straight to the Civ2 section anyway so it is a double link. If you include this External Link then you should really include the Scenario League Forum as it is just as active, if not more active. Not being a bad loser honest!

break-up Gameplay section in sections or sub-sections[edit]

Hello.

I was reading Gameplay section, trying to find out what was the max year to play (and get official score), and I read a mention to "Down Among the Dead Men", and, in order to edit that info (that is, to put the link in the article), it is required of me to edit the great section Gameplay.

I am an adept of smaller sections in Wikipedia (of course, not so minimal sections that have just a line or two):

  • not only because it appears in the TOC, which is good for navigation;
  • as also, in order to edit (add or change something), it takes less weight on the browser, and so, makes edits easier.

Anyway, I could do it myself (break the Gameplay section in smaller sub-sections), but I am not an expert, and I could see, after a while, my changes reverted, so, I am leaving this to the consideration of more experient Wiki editors, because, I took a look at Civ1 article, and Gameplay section is also long, so, probably, doing the break-up in one Civ would also require the same break-up in the other Civs articles, so that all articles "portrait the same equal look".

So, if someone else agrees and can get the job done properly, please leave me a msg on my talk post, so that I be informed. Mrmagoo2006 (talk) 00:19, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong link within Wikipedia[edit]

I was reading this article and I was curious about the song listed in the description of the different advisers on the High Council.

For purposes of clarity, I copied and pasted the relevant passage here:

In many ways, the 'High Council' constitutes a bit of comic relief, especially from the expansionist "military" adviser, who will insist on more troops even when the player has 60 battleships, or during the Medieval Period will sing the last refrain from the 18th Century English traditional song "Down Among the Dead Men", punctuated with a hearty "No complaints, sire!".

The problem is, the link takes me to the biographical page of John Dyer. After perusing the page, I can find no reference to "Down Among the Dead Men".

I am not sure how to do it, but this needs to be fixed. If I have violated any policy's by copying and pasting the passage above, I apologize for the mistake.173.202.11.69 (talk) 01:37, 13 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
