Name[edit]

As per the changes and comment (see History) left by 184.166.84.188...the change would seem to be on good authority. The original "Ridgeby" came from the citation in the biographical encyclopedia cited at the bottom. But I think his middle name still needs to be properly established before the article title is changed and the current article moved. This is because there is still some confusion on the middle name. 184.166.84.188 changed the middle name to "Ridgely", but he (184.166.84.188) claims his own middle name is "Ridgley." Also, Clarence R. Greathouse's own tombstone has "Ridgley" not "Ridgely".[1]. Based on this, it seems that the most likely middle name is "Ridgley" and the not the current "Ridgely." But to add confusion, the Mary and Clarence Greathouse manuscript collection at the University of Kentucky gives his middle name as "Ridgeley". Perhaps change everything, including title, to "Clarence R. Greathouse"? Straitgate (talk) 17:26, 21 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

More on Clarence's Name[edit]

"Ridgley" is a family name in this branch of the Greathouse line. His grandmother was Elizabeth Rigby and her mother was Ann Ridgley. "Ridgley" features quite prominently within the Greathouse family throughout the generations, and is also Clarence's father's name.

Chris Bailey, who has compiled an extensive history of the Greathouse family, confirms that Clarence's middle name was "Ridgley". Bailey does say (Volume 1, Page 312) of Clarence's father Ridgley Greathouse, that the elder Greathouse spelled his name as "Ridgely" in early letters to his brother (John Stull Greathouse) but that in later records, he'd changed that to "Ridgley".

Bailey's book (The Stulls of "Millsborough") can be referenced here: [1]. Details regarding Clarence can be found in Volume 1, Page 395.

Clarence is also listed (several times) in the California Voter Registers, 1866-1898 as "Clarence Ridgley Greathouse", born in Kentucky.
