Incident in East Liverpool, 1903[edit]

For what it's worth:

The June 11, 1903 (East Liverpool, Ohio) Evening Review describes an incident in the previous day's game between the Cuban X Giants and the East Liverpool Y.M.C.A. Williams, playing catcher, apparently upset by a call at home plate by umpire Stillwell, "threw the ball as hard as he could directly at Stillwell, who was standing to the right of the pitcher's box." According to the article police had to intervene to prevent "mob vengeance" by the fans.

The police must have done an exceptional job of quelling the possibility of violence. Either that or the paper exaggerated the enmity. The event happened in the 8th inning, and the game was completed.
