Arrau's Genealogy traced back from Spain to Scotland
[edit]Arrau's mother was a descendant of the Campbells of Glenorchy a "prominent Scottish noble family." i would like to know the source of this information, it would be good if the editor could reference his contributions. What has Arrau got to do with his mothers ancient ancestors anyway, this is the bio of a Pianist from Chillan, Chile. His father was descendant from a man who was sent to Spain by King Carlos III? What about Arrau's Araucanian or Mapuche ancestors I am sure he had some? Moshe-paz 12:25, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
Pupils
Más información en "Who Is Who" enciclopedia británica de hombres ilustres.
- El maestro Arrau además era un hombre muy ilustrado, fué probablemente el mas grande pianista del siglo XX y merece respeto de todo el mundo.
- Unfortunately, I don't read Spanish. Anyone up for an English translation? -- [[User:--MAFL77 (talk) 12:57, 6 August 2011 (UTC)--MAFL77 (talk) 12:57, 6 August 2011 (UTC)JackofOz|JackofOz]] 13:13, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
- Translation:
- "The student that Arrau considered to be the true heir of his gorgeous piano technique and of his school of interpretation is José Luis Aldaz. Arrau treated Jose Luis as if he were his own son and personally taught him for a period of 10 years. No other pianist obtained this sort of treatment from Claudio Arrau. Today, Jose Luis lives in New York City and is dedicated to his pianistic career. More information can be found in the Encyclopedia Britannica's "Who is Who" of illustrious men."
Once again, this list has turned into a catchall. I am taking out anyone who does not have a Wikipedia article.THD3 (talk) 15:24, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
User:MAFL77, who appears to be a single purpose editor has been adding Rosalina Sackstein to the list of Arrau pupils. I have been deleting that name because I can find nothing which makes her notable among the dozens of pianists who studied with Arrau. For example, Garrick Ohlsson is listed because he is one of the world's leading pianists and has made numerous recordings, including the complete piano works of Chopin and complete Beethoven Sonatas. Sackstein appears to have made no recordings, has a limited performing career, and teaches at the University of Miami - which is not a conservatory. Nevertheless, there are no "hard and fast" rules for what constitutes inclusion in a pupil's list - there is only precedent from other pages. Personally, I would rather see the pupils list eliminated than have it become a rambling catch-all. But I welcome input as to whether Sackstein is qualified for inclusion.THD3 (talk) 12:51, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
THD3's point is well taken. I think that the most sensible criterion for any list of pupils must be their notability in the relevant field. Talent, regardless of its essentiality, can not be objectively assessed and is therefore inadequate for such purpose. By the same token, Rosalina Sackstein may well be the bee's knees but fails to meet the notability standard, and should be kept out of the Arrau page. A good rule of thumb here is to allow for the inclusion only of pupils with active Wikipedia articles. MUSIKVEREIN (talk) 13:56, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
Professor Sackstein is recognized internationally as a piano educator. There is ample evidence of the close mentorship Professor Sackstein received from Maestor Arrau. To be sure, prior Arrau students metioned in the article would vouch on these facts, given that Maestro Arrau died some time ago. Is that the proof one requires?
The bigger consideraion is whether a disciple who is acclaimed for being an exemplary educator, specifically, for perpetuating the legacy of the mentor's (Arrau) technique, merits mention. The most important role of any teacher is the perpetuation of the legacy of the (forebear) mentor. In this case, note that Arrau technique is legendary, derived from the following lineage -- Beethoven taught Czerny, Czerny taught Liszt, Liszt taught Krause, Krause taught Arrau. Unless I am mistaken, none of the other pianists listed in the section have made a greater impact than Sackstein on maintaining this legacy. Does anyone have direct evidence to the contrary?
But, just a point of fact about myself: I am not a "single-purpose" account, I have just learned to use this communication medium (so this is my first contribution). In any case, the omission of Professor Sackstein from the list of pupils, a highly respected academician who has done a remarkable service to the piano community in the name of Maestro Arrau, is wrong. But, thank you for your interest in the legacy of Maestro Arrau! --MAFL77 (talk) 11:58, 4 August 2011 (UTC)MAFL77 (talk) 11:56, 4 August 2011 (UTC) MAFL77 — Preceding unsigned comment added by MAFL77 (talk • contribs) 00:27, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
- In the interest of avoiding an edit war, I have decided not to revert the latest addition of Professor Sackstein to the article. However, I have added a dubious tag for the reasons outlined above. Do not remove this tag until consensus has been achieved on this matter.THD3 (talk) 13:12, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
This is an excellent idea. I await the academic assessment of a true academician, and I also greatly appreciate your (THD3's) academic threshold. That said, I urge the community of respondents to not judge academicians by their institutions. There are thousands of eminent academicians that serve institutions that are not viewed by some as "illustrious." The circumstances of one's life often dictates the choices they are forced to make professionally; in the case of Professor Sackstein, she is a Cuban immigrant (again, the first person from Cuba to be awarded a government scholarship to study music abroad - privately with Arrau - for over 3 years), and she had to forego a promising concert career and focus her energy, knowledge and talent as an educator in Miami for personal reasons. In any case, the University of Miami Frost School of Music is an outstanding music school, and I shutter to think that it - i.e., its faculty AND students - would be dismissed by anyone simply because it is not a "conservatory." Importantly, I would hate to think that the 'learned' community represented by Wikipedia would make the fundamental error to judge books by their cover, i.e., "Encylopedia Brittanica"! Last Name Pronunciation
[edit]One thing that might be nice to add is how to pronounce his last name. I'm a little stumped myself. Mundhenk (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 20:47, 9 December 2010 (UTC).
His last name is pronounced "a-row". In true Spanish fashion, the "r" sound should vibrate as in the Scottish Highlands. MUSIKVEREIN (talk) 12:57, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
Yes, Arrau taught Sackstein
[edit]Yes, Rosalina Sackstein was one of Claudio Arrau's students. I was one of her students when I was a child, and I met Mr. Arrau at her home. He was a reserved gentleman, but he was very nice, and a group of her students, I among them, visited with him for a little while. She introduced us to him by saying, "These are your grandchildren."
Dr. Sackstein has tirelessly championed Arrau's Liszt-based playing technique. It was a major focus of my studies with her. She may not have been a major, international concertist, but she has had tremendous influence in propagating Arrau's fluid-wrist, three-dimensional playing style. It lives on in her students and in those we teach. She deserves to be referenced in any list of his musical progeny.

Birthdate: 6 or 7 February 1903?
[edit]This edit of 2 Oct 2012 changed the date from 6 February to 7 February 1903. I can't see any support for that, except the Spanish version of the article seems to like 7 Feb, whereas the rest of the world prefers 6 Feb.
Does anyone know anything about this? On the face of it, the edit above does not deserve to live any longer, as it was totally uncited - but this es:WP thing is a slight worry. -- Jack of Oz [Talk] 21:42, 11 November 2012 (UTC)
Can we add some youtube videos of this guy?
[edit]I thought it would be interesting for readers to liste to some of his playing. He is amazing.Booklaunch (talk) 12:47, 13 May 2013 (UTC)

Somebody keeps deleting my edit in section "life" of Claudio Arrau's page
[edit]Hi!
I made this edit: "In 1929, Arrau married lyric soprano Erika Burkewitch (1909-1997), a Latvian national. They had one child: Klaudio (1929-1949). In 1935 they separated. In 1949 their son Kaludio died in a Soviet prison camp in Bautzen, East Germany." It is a fact, please stop deleting it! Or give an explanation, why you are deleting this information. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.71.44.161 (talk) 13:57, 3 November 2016 (UTC)
