'Prof' Wragge?

When and where did he gain the title of 'Professor'? I've never seen it used anywhere else. BodachMor 16:46, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

There are quite a lot of newspaper references to him as "Professor C.L. Wragge" as well as many others to "Professor Wragge" that occur in a meteorological context (so presumably talking about the same man), for example:

Today we associate the title of Professor with a university appointment and there is no mention of him having such an appointment, but perhaps there were other "norms" for the use of that title in those times. Perhaps it was just an informal honorific for his being so "learned"; he was, after all, a Fellow of both the Royal Geographical Society and the Royal Meteorological Society. List of Cyclone Names

Does anyone know if there was a full list compiled of all the cyclone names he used.

I've only been able to locate two:

• Cyclone Mahina
• Cyclone Nachon

There are plenty of newspaper accounts of Wragge's naming of individual cyclones:

• names of "storms"
• names of "cyclones"

From these we can see that he had a period where he used the letters of the Greek alphabet, a period where he used the names of politicians, a period where he used the name of South Sea maidens (with photographs), and it seems by the end he was just using female names (a tradition that others continued until our more recent politically-correct times). Apparently his original reason for naming them was to use as a shorthand in sending cables (I guess it cost less than telegraphing a more complex description). I don't know if there is any evidence that he had a list that he was working his way through or whether he just plucked each name from the air when he needed a new one.
