Shooting[edit]

Turns out there are reports going around tonight that Clementa Pinckney has been shot in an attack on a church in South Carolina. Depending on the political climate and whether these initial reports can be confirmed, this article may get a lot of traffic within the next week or so. Figured I'd let you all know.

Since the reports are indeed unconfirmed, I will refrain from editing the article. 50.172.204.158 (talk) 04:25, 18 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Anybody think it was a political assassination?[edit]

I think it is. — Preceding unsigned comment added by NoahGoldFox (talkcontribs) 07:16, 18 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Far too early to tell, and 8 other people were killed in the same incident. That said, this really isn't the place for idle discussion 50.172.204.158 (talk) 10:05, 18 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It isn't too soon to determine that. The perp knew whom he was seeking to kill.
"A relative of one of the nine people killed at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina, said a survivor of the massacre told her the shooter entered the church asking to see the Rev. Clementa Pinckney. 'They showed him where he was and Clementa, being the kind-spirited person that he is, he had him [the shooter, identified as suspect Dylann Roof] sit next to him,' Sylvia Johnson, a cousin of the church's slain pastor, told ABC News today after speaking with one of the survivors who was in the church.[1]
Which indicates that the killer deliberately targeted Rev. Pinckney in a political assassination. This article belongs in the category "Assassinated American politicians." Johanna-Hypatia (talk) 04:53, 2 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The article says (via sources) "While the FBI investigated the mass shooting as a hate crime, many others considered the attack a racially motivated act of terrorism, and criticized law enforcement and the media for not labeling it as such." It seems that this should not be labeled an assassination in Wikipedia's voice. If there is debate on this, which seems to be the case, WP should follow WP:NPOV and not take a side. - Brianhe (talk) 17:42, 11 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Terrorism and assassination are not mutually exclusive. There are multiple reports Roof targeted this particular church in general and Pinckney specifically, and which describe him as an assassin and the act as an assassination: [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] Pinckney was killed in an act of premeditated political violence. Personally, I'm not sure how it could more clearly meet the definition of an assassination. -Kudzu1 (talk) 04:56, 12 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
That may be so but it's considered OR to come to our own conclusions about things that are documented to be in debate. The NBC News link you provided is an op-ed, it's going up against an FBI report. Even one of his eulogizers opened with "There is debate over whether this was an act of terrorism or a hate crime."[7] Your edit summary when you restored the term "assassination" said that consensus had been reached on Wikipedia to use it. Can you point us to where this consensus was formed? Else the term should remain struck from the article. - Brianhe (talk) 15:45, 12 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Consensus was determined by the mere fact that after Johanna-Hypatia laid out the above argument, the article has referred to Pinckney's slaying as an assassination. Please review WP:CONSENSUS. It is not original research as it is referred to in multiple sources as an assassination and Roof is referred to in multiple sources as an assassin. This dovetails with the definition of an assassination and is suitable for Wikipedia. If there is consensus to remove the term (which would be what is required as consensus was previously reached in favor), then we can remove it. I continue to think it is appropriate. -Kudzu1 (talk) 21:19, 12 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
In retrospect, the consensus was based on the freshness of the crime rather than the actual definition of an assassinaton. There's no indication that Dylann Roof knew who any of his victims were, much less that he was targeting Pinckney. Using the term "assassination" is uber-dramatic--- still waiting for him to be declared a religious martyr --- but having an inherent notability article on Wikipedia for being a state legislator doesn't make your murder a political assassination. He went to the church seeking Clementa Pinckney -- specifically choosing that church and pastor because of its historical significance. Dr. Blazer (talk) 22:50, 12 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Reverted these edits as they were not necessary; existing citations are still good so this was unnecessary. -- Erika aka BrillLyle (talk) 07:29, 28 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
