Purpose

[edit]
Could there be added a section on the purpose of a cloister? The only purpose now given is the "effect of separating the world of the monks from that of the serfs”; whereas, I propose the outer wall fulfils that function, not the space within them. I have spoken with monks, and all cherish cloisters for a space facilitating continuous walking meditation — that is a necessity to them. Outdoors yet sheltered by a roof, by repetitively encircling the same fixed route - a necessity - the body finds peace while the mind can focus with different facilities than in static contemplation. In walking meditation, the monks declare they find insights, solutions to problems, choices reached. Also, their health is supported by exercise in the fresh air outdoors in almost any weather - necessity. These benefits they find fulfil the circle of life experience within a monastery. Could we fit such a section into your page? Kildwyke (talk)
