NSW Royal Arms?

[edit]

The article presently states that following the State Arms, Symbols and Emblems Act 2004, the arms of New South Wales are now the Royal Arms for that State. I've just read the whole act and nowhere does it say this; the point of the act was to replace the Royal Arms with the arms of the State for all official contexts. Given that this Act was passed under the republican Bob Carr I suspect this was more a measure to reduce the visibility of Australian Royal symbolism and replace it with the non-Royal State symbolism. To state definitely that the NSW Arms are now "Royal Arms" is one interpretation of the legislation only, and breaks WP:OR. Opera hat (talk) 11:47, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The replacement of the UK Royal Arms with NSW arms for all official purposes merely reflects the change of NSW's legal status caused by the passing of the Australia Acts. Prior to this occurring, NSW remained legally a British colony and its head of state was the Queen of the United Kingdom, who would act on the advice of the British government. Since then, NSW has been sovereign and independent of the UK with the Queen acting instead as Queen in Right of NSW on the advice of the NSW government. Since the Queen is the legal embodiment of the State of NSW, any arms of the state are technically those of HM in Right of NSW. 110.32.128.194 (talk) 03:45, 13 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
