Number of episodes[edit]

Thanks for fixing this Softlavender. I went by IMDb's info which I know is always fraught with problems. One question though - since this was and ITV programme there will have been commercials. Do you know if they aired it with closing and opening credits after each hour? That would make it four parts aired on two nights. I ask because that has happened with other ITV shows. One other thing to check would be the DVD - do you own it? Having asked that I know that won't be 100% accurate because credits have been removed before. This used to happen all the time with VHS (one of the worst was what the marketing wonks did to The Duchess of Duke St) but I think the only DVD sets that I have that removed the credits are Poldark (the US DVD release restored these) and A Year in Provence. Thanks again for your work creating this article. MarnetteD | Talk 12:05, 28 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have recordings direct from the original UK television transmissions, and the 2010 full-length DVD. ITV did air the show with closing credits after each hour, with commercials or news inbetween the two segments that aired per night. I personally count this as two episodes on two consecutive nights, rather than four episodes. The DVD is divided into Part One and Part Two. I don't really agree with IMDB's dividing this thing up into four episodes, and am currently arguing with them about it because it messes up the cast lists that appear on the main page. But whatever LOL. If you really insist that this is a four part deal, I will simply edit the article to explain that in the UK TV it was four parts, on American TV it was two parts, and on the DVD it is two parts. That's a lot of explaining to do, and it would be unnecessary if we just call it two parts. :) Softlavender (talk) 12:16, 28 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Based on your recordings of the original broadcast I would say that technically it is four parts, especially since there was news programming in between the episodes. I would suggest that you might switch to the wording "four parts aired over two nights" in the lede and mention that it aired in two parts on Showtime. I don't know how notable the DVD info is so it might not need addition. However, this is just a suggestion. If you don't like it I will certainly defer to you as the creator of the article. I got here when you added a link to this article on Joss Ackland's article. Now that I have read the article I just might have to go and order the DVD set. Thanks for your time and cheers. I just think all that subverts the important info, which is that the total length is less than 210 minutes, so it's practially a movie, not a series or serial. Who cares that it was "technically" in four pieces when aired in the UK in 1988? Even then it's more like two parts since the whole shebang took only two consecutive nights. Anyway, Joss Ackland is wonderful in this; I think you would like it. Not very expensive, and it's on eBay as well. Softlavender (talk) 12:51, 28 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
