Galicia or Portugal?

[edit]

I must say that the Coelerni are from Galicia and not from Portugal, as we can read in the article. The main city of the Coelerni was Coeliobriga, now Castromao in Celanova, province of Ourense. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nikembo (talkcontribs)

Well, my friend, You seem to be right! As can be seen in the Detailed map of the Pre-Roman Peoples of Iberia (around 200 BC) presented in the article. However, the Portuguese article, besides stating the fact that the Coelerni endured until the arrival of the Suevi, also say, without citing sources - that's true, that they lived in the Trás-os-Montes region, in the mountains between the rivers Tua and Sabor. Maybe a later migration? Who can tell? Where can we find the sources to this "mistery"? Do you wanto to try? Be bold! The Ogre 13:09, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Done some expasion of the article. The Ogre 16:15, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The Portuguese Wiki says that Coelerni lived between rivers Tua and Sabor, because the writers are base in J. de Alarcâo, whom defended these theorie before the discovery of the tessera of Castromao. After this discovery, this is not doubt, between scholars, that Coelerni inhabited the zone in surroundings of Castromao. After Celanova is not distant from Northern Portugal it is posible that a part of Coelerni inhabited some today Portuguese territories. The problem is what territories ?. The banks of Tua e Sabor absolutely no; they are distant from Celanova-Castromao region, and there are another peoples or tribus in the intermediate space. This matter is not problem of nationalities, this is, simply, a problem of scientific true - ip 213603030 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.60.60.30 (talkcontribs)
Of course, you are right 213.60.60.30. Could you provide a full reference of that J. de Alarcão you mention? I would like to mention him in the main article, where I'll state the incorrectness of his views. Thank you. The Ogre 15:59, 8 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I am searching it, by of heart, is José de Alarcào ou Jorge de Alarcâo, O Portugal Romano,(Lisboa, 1976), p. 18 (is cited as J.de Alarcâo). About the second problem (subsistence of Coelerni until Suevi epoch) - Thas depends of a interpretation fron Parochiale Suevicum, a document of the final 6th century. The lectures of these document - according the diverses papers conservated - can supply the names of some sites as Coleia in Visuensis sedem (today bishopship of Viseu) or Ciliolis ad cathedram Bracarensis (i.e., bishopship of Braga), which names are similar to Coeliobriga, but these sites are not, necessary, Coeliobriga. Similarities or equalities between names of cities of Gallaecia, are well known. Thus, between Gigurri is cited a Calubriga, and another Calubriga is also cited in Tras-os-Montes, in two different inscriptions and different detailed circunstances - ip 213603030, 9 August 2007

I think you are talking about Jorge de Alarcão, Portugal romano, Lisboa, 1973 (more four other editions), also published in English as Jorge de Alarcão, Roman Portugal, Warminster, 1988 (in 4 volumes). The Ogre 16:20, 8 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
His page is at [1]. By the way, you can sign your name and date by just typing four tildes (~). Thanks! The Ogre 16:21, 8 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Added the reference. The Ogre 16:25, 8 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
