Revisions

[edit]

I revised the article a bit, but it still needs some work. The French article fr:Affaire Coffin contains an extensive timeline, which I assume is accurate although the way it is worded suggests some bias.

I can't quite figure out what happened with Coffin's application to the Supreme Court of Canada. The 1956 SCC case is not online and I haven't read it. In paragraph 68 of the Same-Sex Marriage Reference, the Court briefly mentions the Coffin Reference and says no right of appeal to the SCC existed. But that makes no sense: it was a capital case so how could there not be a right of appeal. The French article suggests that the leave application was denied by Douglas Abbott and then the Court found it could not overrule him.

There is quite a bit more to the story than is currently in the article. For example, on 1955-09-06, after his conviction and unsuccessful appeal, Coffin apparently broke out of jail with a revolver he had sculpted out of soap. --Mathew5000 11:33, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Also, here is another interesting article about how Coffin's son went into hiding. --Mathew5000 11:51, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
