Mobile apps
The Coinbase mobile apps have been featured in the media, first when Apple pulled their user app, see e.g. http://www.businessinsider.com/why-apple-is-rejecting-bitcoin-apps-2013-12 . Then somewhat less prominently their excursion into Bitcoin point-of-sale technology, see e.g. http://thenextweb.com/insider/2013/12/30/coinbase-launches-point-of-sale-app-to-let-physical-retailers-accept-payment-in-bitcoin/#!rFEm6 Chris Arnesen 22:58, 7 January 2014 (UTC)
Coinbase's new Bitcoin exchange.
Did some minor cleanup. Their exchange announcement got a lot of press. Then there were regulatory problems.[1][2]. They're not the first US Bitcoin exchange; there's Kraken [3] and there was Tradehill.[4] So I took the "first" part out. John Nagle (talk) 20:38, 29 January 2015 (UTC)
Linking issue
Greetings! Chrisarnesen, you said in your edit summary[5] that WP:SPECIFICLINK doesn't explain the edit where I delinked bitcoin. I guess the ES doesn't allow enough characters to explain the edit in detail enough, but I think WP:SPECIFICLINK discusses the problem quite clearly. I'll try to open up my edit a little bit. As you can see, the text says "bitcoin wallet".
First, "bitcoin" (currency) is a whole different thing from "bitcoin wallet", the place where you are keeping your bitcoins. There are many different sorts of wallets, such as online wallets, desktop wallets, and offline wallets. There are many different kind of technologies that the wallets are using as well. Already this should be enough to omit the link.
Second, if one still wants to add a wikilink, the current [[bitcoin]] wallet is similar to Icelandic [[ortography]], which is unspecific per WP:SPECIFICLINK.
I hope this helps! Cheers! Jayaguru-Shishya (talk) 12:07, 31 January 2015 (UTC)
- However, since there is no article on "Bitcoin wallet" it could be argued this is the most specific link. Also, the fact that Bitcoin wallet currently redirects to a section on the article on Bitcoin makes your argument that it is a "whole different thing" look kind of silly. I don't particularly care, but also don't see any issue here, at least there was none until you started insisting on removing various links that in fact are related to this article. In short, I think you're being unnecessary red-tapist here. Gavleson (talk) 13:34, 31 January 2015 (UTC)
- Like Gavleson said, WP:SPECIFICLINK says that if we're trying to choose between "bitcoin wallet" and "bitcoin wallet", in general we should choose the more specific of the two. It doesn't say that we should unlink the thing. In this case, the fact that Coinbase is a bitcoin company is pretty central to the article. Therefore the first appearance of the word "bitcoin" deserves a wikilink to the relevant topic.Chris Arnesen 14:42, 31 January 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for your replies! I added a wikiinkg to Bitcoin#Wallets. Perhaps this will do... Cheers! Jayaguru-Shishya (talk) 21:13, 31 January 2015 (UTC)

Source for founding date of Coinbase?
The article says Coinbase was founded on "June 20, 2012". I couldn't find a source for this claim. What is the source of this date? --Soluvo (talk) 10:03, 29 August 2017 (UTC)
- Addition: I don't doubt that Coinbase was founded in June 2012. See this source for example: "Founded in June 2012 [...], the company has won the support not just of the bitcoin establishment, but also of the wider tech industry." [6]. It's just about the day, June 20th. --Soluvo (talk) 10:13, 29 August 2017 (UTC)

In the introduction the word bitcoin has an image after it of the bitcoin sign in brackets. Please either replace this with the Unicode symbol “₿” or remove it, because there is no need to have an image inline. 101.174.96.40 (talk) 07:25, 12 October 2017 (UTC)
Wikipedia partnership fraud
"Throughout 2014, the company also formed partnerships with Overstock, Dell, Expedia, Dish Network, Time Inc., and Wikipedia to power accepting bitcoin payments." Partnership with Wikipedia? Bitcoin service provider
I'm planning to create an article called "Bitcoin service provider" and classify Coinbase as such. Any objections? Chris Arnesen 04:11, 22 November 2013 (UTC)
- Yeah, I never got around to that, and doubt I ever will. Chris Arnesen 22:54, 7 January 2014 (UTC)
- Hey Chris, saw you reverted my description change listing it as a "Bitcoin exchange". I hadn't seen this. You said in the edit comment it's not an exchange because there are no bids, only buys and sells. My understanding of a currency exchange is that you exchange one currency for another. Some facilitate consumer-to-consumer trades using buy and sell offers/bids, others buy and sell currencies themselves using prices based on changing market dynamics. It's worth highlighting the distinction in the article, but I think in normal usage, Coinbase is still considered an exchange. A few sources that use "bitcoin exchange" that way:
- Coin jJolt “...Coinbase is known to charge users with outrageous fees that can be more costly than the amount pertaining the transaction itself.” — Preceding unsigned comment added by Carlphiffer (talk • contribs) 10:10, 25 December 2017 (UTC)
- The Wall Street Journal “...Brian Armstrong, CEO of Coinbase, a Bitcoin exchange service based in San Francisco.”
- Forbes “Fred Ehrsam of Coinbase, a San Francisco-based Bitcoin exchange which had to halt its bitcoin sales...”
- Entrepreneur “...Fred Ehrsam, co-founder of the Bitcoin exchange and wallet service Coinbase, ...”
- Business Insider “Mt. Gox, once the gold standard of Bitcoin exchanges, has been having technical problems. Here's a chart of Bitcoin prices per Coinbase, another exchange.”
- Bitcoin Magazine “...US Bitcoin exchange and merchant processor Coinbase, ...”
- CoinDesk “Coinbase, an integrated wallet/bitcoin exchange operates its online wallet worldwide, but only allows people to buy bitcoins in the US.”
- Washington Post “...a new generation of Bitcoin exchanges, including Coinbase and Circle, are more sophisticated.”
- USA Today ”Bitcoins are acquired through a purchase at a bitcoin exchange, through a personal exchange with someone who has bitcoins or as payment for goods or services. One popular exchange is Coinbase, ...”
- There are different ways of describing Coinbase, but as the term "bitcoin exchange" becomes more widely used and understood, it seems like that's the canonical term for a company/service whose primary business is exchanging bitcoins for money.
- Point well taken. I reverted my reversion, thanks very much for providing such a thorough case for the change. I'd like to discuss this further with a wider group. I'll start a thread on the Bitcoin page.Chris Arnesen 16:26, 22 February 2014 (UTC)
- I think it's more accurate to call Coinbase a market-maker rather than an exchange. Like most ForEx trading firms, they buy and sell on their own account with their own inventory, and while they do not take a spread, they do charge a fee that is effectively equivalent. 24.97.110.196 (talk) 01:13, 5 March 2014 (UTC)
- I'd agree it's accurate but, but not more accurate; Coinbase is many things. The first sentence gives a terse explanation, perhaps overly simplistic, though the first paragraph as a whole provides a balanced explanation. One area I think could be clarified is the second sentence, describing users buying and selling Bitcoins...maybe it could delve into the business model as market maker, or clarify that customers are buying and selling from Coinbase, as opposed to through coinbase in a sense. (Provided a reliable source says this, which I think is likely.) Agyle (talk) 02:54, 5 March 2014 (UTC)

It would be more clear if the section about the Coinbase app stated that it hit the #1 spot for free apps on the App Store, rather than say it became the most downloaded. Saying it was the "most downloaded" implies that over its lifetime, Coinbase was downloaded more than Facebook, Instagram, Spotify, etc. which it clearly has not been. 67.184.153.213 (talk) 19:17, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

- Bunch of crappy blogs. and twitter. Wikipedia is not a newspaper or a blog. this is an encyclopedia. Jytdog (talk) 19:12, 17 February 2018 (UTC)
These "crappy blogs" are the only official statements on this incident from WorldPlay and Coinbase. This incident has costed hundreds of thousands of dollars in double-charged accounts as well as refunds for said charges and associated fees, and merits mention on this Wiki page as it is actually pretty notable and will continue to develop in the next few days. An article from TechCrunch was also included as a 3rd party reporter on this issue. --Codered999 (talk) 19:28, 17 February 2018 (UTC)
- See WP:NOTNEWS. btw, did you notice how the author of the techcrunch piece disclosed that they he holds cryptocurrencies? Holding crypto is also a COI in Wikipedia and we look for people to disclose that. Jytdog (talk) 19:33, 17 February 2018 (UTC)
Uhh... Then just say that particular article is not sufficient enough for a reliable source instead of attacking me (who did not write the article) for COI. The lines between news and a historical event regarding this company are very blurred on this issue. Many company Wiki articles contain a "Criticism" section and these types of issues are pretty common in those sections. I'm going to need another person to respond on this because we're obviously at a stalemate disagreement on this.

--Codered999 (talk) 19:41, 17 February 2018 (UTC)
- Codered999 noting that COI should be disclosed is not an "attack" - i did not come even close to implying that you have anything to disclose - that was a reminder to everybody here. If it applies to you, it applies to you. Only you can know that. and if it does, you will do the ethical thing, or not. if you have been affected by this issue, you should definitely disclose that. If. Jytdog (talk) 19:55, 17 February 2018 (UTC)
- I'm not against a criticism section, but it must be sourced back to very high quality sources, like the NY Times, major news outlets, etc. You can use primary sources for mundane facts, but when you are throwing criticisms at a company, idea, person, etc. you need to back it up with the highest quality sourcing. Provide that, and I'm happy to look at it. Dennis Brown - 2¢ 19:50, 17 February 2018 (UTC)
@Dennis I'll have to get back to that on more sources then because the Fortune source is gonna be the best "mainstream" one for now as the situation is still developing. The fact that this problem even exists was publicly acknowledged only about 48 hours ago. --Codered999 (talk) 20:15, 17 February 2018 (UTC)
Date of founding has become incorrect
per multiple sources, including past entries on this page, the founding date should be in 6/2012. However, the page currently says 2011. Someone should fix this.
see: https://www.crunchbase.com/person/brian-armstrong#section-overview for a source confirming this.
Tricorder42 (talk) 23:29, 26 March 2018 (UTC)
- Do you have a better source? Retimuko (talk) 00:01, 27 March 2018 (UTC)
- Do I need one? The claim is currently unsourced (the cited source does not include that claim). I can contact Coinbase if you like, get them to post on their blog or something. Tricorder42 (talk) 06:55, 20 May 2018 (UTC)
- Wikipedia must be based on reliable secondary sources. That crunchbase doesn't look like one. Please have a look at WP:RS. It is too bad that the claim is currently unsourced. We should either remove it together with irrelevant citation or better find a good source. Retimuko (talk) 16:44, 20 May 2018 (UTC)
- I found an article in VentureBeat (not the best source in my view) that claims June 2012. I left the existing citation in place since it was apparently there to confirm the claim about Fred Ehrsam being involved. Retimuko (talk) 17:09, 20 May 2018 (UTC)

PayPal of Bitcoin
The article contains the sentence "Coinbase has been called the PayPal of Bitcoin, because it aims to make it easier for non-technical users to send and receive payments", citing this 2012-06-29 allthingsd.com article. A 2012-06-29 privateinternetaccess.com blog post (from the same day) said Coinbase "aims to be the paypal of Bitcoin." It's not clear whether third parties came up with the Paypal comparison, and it was adopted by Coinbase, or whether Coinbase created and used the marketing phrase, which repeated by third parties. This 2012-08-21 post also described Coinbase as "PayPal for Bitcoin", and a 2012-08-22 thenextweb.com article said Coinbase was "calling itself the 'PayPal of Bitcoin'", noting the frequent use of "XXXX of XXXX" descriptions for several companies at the Y-Combinator presentation it was covering. Other sources around that time use the same phrase, which was often repeated in later coverage as the company attracted more coverage. Personally I think it should be stricken from the article, both because its origins do not seem clear, and because it just sounds marketing hype, rather than neutral encyclopedic coverage. Agyle (talk) 18:41, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
- Agreed. Chris Arnesen 20:32, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, it's marketing hype but that's often part of the game. There are dozens of exchanges but the success or failure of the currencies depend upon reaching a more general audience. This illustrates their focus is on marketing to a broad community instead of insiders. Coinluver (talk) 14:00, 12 September 2018 (UTC)
Venture Fund
In April 2018, Coinbase announced that it has formed an early stage venture fund, focused on investment into blockchain and cryptocurrency related companies.

Coinbase as a Technical Term
You will find frequent mentioning of the term "coinbase" in crypto currency related source code which certainly has nothing to do with the company. Does anyone know what the concept "coinbase" actually refers to?
- Check out the "mining" section on Bitcoin. It's explained there. Chris Arnesen 16:10, 28 March 2014 (UTC)
- The technical term "coinbase" refers to the first transaction in a block of bitcoin transactions. It is the bitcoin block's base transaction. It is created by the miner (or mining pool) involved in creating the proposed block to be mined, and it is the transaction that actually delivers the mining reward to the miner(s) if they successfully mine it. For the company name, "Coinbase" acts more like a portmanteau - the company's primary service, at first, was providing online wallets for custody and transaction of bitcoin by customers and retailers, so an online "base" for one's crypto "coin." The coincidence with the technical term, however, probably had marketing appeal among insiders. Mental Nomad (talk) 19:44, 26 July 2019 (UTC)
History
I'd recommend changing the line "In 2014, the company grew to one million users, acquired the blockchain explorer service Blockr and the web bookmarking company Kippt, secured insurance covering the value of bitcoin stored on their servers, and launched the vault system for secure bitcoin storage." To the following:
"... secured insurance covering the value of bitcoin in its custody, and launched the vault system for secure bitcoin custody."
This wording better reflects the following: 1. Bitcoin are not stored on servers. (Bitcoin balances are globally agreed-upon ledger entries. The destruction of Coinbase's servers would not affect any balances.) 2. It describes Coinbase's role as an asset custodian using a term standard in both the banking and crypto industries. (see [Custodian_bank]) Mental Nomad (talk) 19:53, 26 July 2019 (UTC)
- I am not sure if coinbase has custody of bitcoin for its users, but I would guess they do. Thus some type of incident at coinbase could affect their custody. Also, please add new sections at the bottom of the talk page, it seems you might have added it in the middle. Jtbobwaysf (talk) 05:22, 27 July 2019 (UTC)

Splitting off Coinbase Global, Inc.
Have noticed that Roblox Corporation has been split off from Roblox due to the formers pending IPO. Similarly, Coinbase Global, Inc. needs its own wikipage due to its pending IPO, thus likewise it needs to be splitt off from the Coinbase wikipage in a similar manner, see, Coninbase S1[1] :@IceWelder: might be of interest to you. Regards Devokewater 10:07, 1 March 2021 (UTC)
References
- Devokewater, I think the story here is a bit different from Roblox in that Coinbase Global appears to mostly be a shell corporation (with few or no separate operations) that only acts as the legal holding for Coinbase and two related companies (CB Payments, Ltd / Coinbase Custody Trust Company, LLC). From the S1:
We were initially incorporated in May 2012 as Coinbase, Inc., a Delaware corporation. In January 2014, Coinbase Global, Inc. was incorporated as a Delaware corporation to act as the holding company of Coinbase, Inc. and our other subsidiaries. In April 2014, we completed a corporate reorganization whereby Coinbase, Inc. became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Coinbase Global, Inc. Coinbase Global, Inc.’s principal assets are the equity interests of Coinbase, Inc.
- Looking at the sources, Coinbase Global does not appear to be notable outside of Coinbase. The article already covers the company Coinbase, so we can easily name-drop Coinbase Global as well. On Roblox, the split allowed for the clean separation of game-specific and company-specific developments. Here, the histories are (apart from legalities) pretty much the same. IceWelder [✉] 10:47, 1 March 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for your reply + detailed analysis @IceWelder: lets add reference to Coinbase Global, Inc.. Regards Devokewater 11:38, 1 March 2021 (UTC)
reverts
Hello you reverted my edits here [9]. Please explain your two reverts.
1. You removed a wikilink and kept the same description of digital asset broker, which I was using. So you only deleted the wikilink, thereby asserting that Coinbase is not a Digital currency exchange.
2. You removed mention of the coinbase app saying it is something different. What is the coinbase app, is not from distributed by coinbase the company? I thought this article was about the company, and thus news of the company would be relevent.
I will revert your changes and you can respond here.
Thanks Jtbobwaysf (talk) 10:06, 10 December 2017 (UTC)
- Please read WP:BRD. I have reverted back. The burden is on you to explain, not me, as you are the only seeking to change the status quo. Changing the direct link of Digital currency exchange to "digital asset broker" makes no sense. If you want to change the name of that article, go there and start an WP:RM. As for the part about the app, the app is not the same as the exchange, and saying something is "ironic" is a bit of original research. Dennis Brown - 2¢ 10:19, 10 December 2017 (UTC)
- Hello Dennis, i have warned you on your talk page about edit warring.
- 1. I did not change the description and left it as digital asset broker. I only added a wikilink.
- 2. You also haven't responded to the other point about the app.
- Thanks, Jtbobwaysf (talk) 10:54, 10 December 2017 (UTC)
- As I explained on your talk page, the burden is on you. I keep linking you to WP:BRD but you obviously haven't read it. The person who wants to change the existing text has the burden of explaining the change. It isn't the other way around. Templating me for edit warring isn't discussion, it is trying to intimidate. Again, read BRD so you understand how it works here, then by all means, try to achieve an consensus here for your changes. Otherwise, it is you who is edit warring, according to the policies here. Dennis Brown - 2¢ 10:59, 10 December 2017 (UTC)
- I did put that one change back, I read it wrong, and adding that link is a good change. That is why the talk page works. All you had to do is explain it, like you did here. Dennis Brown - 2¢ 11:01, 10 December 2017 (UTC)
- When you twice revert cited content you are one revert away from 3RR. It is my duty to warn you (or at least I thought so), which the 3rr warning you also reverted anyhow btw. Moving on, you have now kept the wikilink to the digital asset exchange. Last, whats the problem with the coinbase app being #1 in the app store again? Just seemed their app being #1, offline due to server overload, all on the same day bitcoin had an all-time high seems encylopedic. Frankly I dont really care, and it could be borderline promotional, but I am just curious. Jtbobwaysf (talk) 11:18, 10 December 2017 (UTC)
- No, it's your duty to come to the talk page and explain why you want to add material that others find contentious. I already explained the problem with the app addition, you can't call it "ironic" for starters, as that is drawing a conclusion that isn't supported by sources, and it isn't really relevant in the context that was provided. - OK, i re-added it without the ironic text. Rest of it shouldn't be controversial. Jtbobwaysf (talk) 13:33, 10 December 2017 (UTC)
- I'm still not in love with the addition, but I will leave it until others give their opinion on it. Dennis Brown - 2¢ 13:30, 11 December 2017 (UTC)

I agree with Jtbobwaysf that this article should at least mention the mobile app from Coinbase. I restored the TechCrunch citation, since WP:RSP seems to indicate it's good enough for what we're using it here (verifiability), and added a reference to a 2018 book. --DavidCary (talk) 08:05, 3 March 2021 (UTC)
Founding info
I'm trying to make sense of the confusing founding info. The article says "Blockchain.info co-founder Ben Reeves was part of the original founding team but later parted ways with Armstrong due to their different stands on how the Coinbase wallet should operate. The remaining founding team enrolled in the Summer 2012 Y Combinator startup incubator program." But according to Wired [[10]], the company didn't exist before Y Combinator, and Armstrong basically fired Reeves before the Y Combinator funding happened. Ehrsam didn't join until after that event. So Armstrong was apparently the only founder when the company got started with YC funding. I tried to revise the history accordingly, but if anyone else has better info, please feel free to update. Advert flag
I updated this a few months ago, and noticed it's been changed a bit since then. It was just flagged for being an advert, by GermanKity. I'm going to review and see what needs to change, but please also let me know what you think is advertorial so I'm addressing the right content. Thanks! TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 02:14, 15 July 2021 (UTC)
- There is a lot to clean into this article specially the entire products section.GermanKity (talk) 16:30, 19 July 2021 (UTC)
- @GermanKity: I whittled the product info down to the bare bones, and made sure that everything was sourced. Looks pretty good now. There's nothing else in that section that can be removed without deleting products. If this works, and you have no further changes, please feel free to remove the advert tag. Thanks! TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 22:40, 19 July 2021 (UTC)
- Tag removed after 30 days of no discussion or visible attempts to address concerns. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 18:03, 20 August 2021 (UTC)
Coinbase fraud November 17th 2021
On November 17th coinbase froze all trading on Gyen because they messed up by allowing a stable coin to increase exponentially in value. At least 100 people lost 6 digit figures and 1000's of others lost most of their investments. Coinbase tried to keep it out of the news but over 1600 people that were robbed by them teamed up in a FB group to solve this problem. Hundreds of reports were sent to the SEC and FTC. There is a change.org petition to try to alert the mainstream media of the fraud. Coinbase thinks this issue is solved but it is far from solved. Hundreds of people are determined to leave Coinbase and never return. This is the beginning of the end for coinbase if they don't figure out how to appease everyone they stole from. 98.27.220.28 (talk) 00:52, 4 December 2021 (UTC)

Dear Editors of this Coinbase Page,
This is a request that you add the recent Gyen scandal to your Complaints page. They stole money out of 1000's of users accts and I'm part of a social media group with over 1700 users who were scammed by them. From me they stole over $5000. But this fraud totals into the 10's of millions and beyond!
On November 16th Coinbase listed Gyen which is a stable coin that isn't suppose to go up or down very much in value. That coin however jumped from .0087 cents to .08 cents by November 17th. Coinbase neglected to remove it early when the problem first started. Then they canceled all of the sales on Gyen on November 17th. Two days later on November 19th Coinbase purposely allows Gyen to trade again but only after they stoled 50% or more of Gyen out of our balances! They proceeded to lie to us via email and tell us that what we have in our Gyen balance is correct. We all know that is a lie. We've sent them 1000's of emails explaining how they defrauded us and they have brushed us off until this day and pretend like they aren't responsible. There was also a second glitch on November 19th that caused some people to show 100 times the amount of Gyen shares owned. Some people may have been able to move those shares or money off of Coinbase. We have no solid evidence yet as to whether or not anyone did make off with money. The only evidence we have is our screenshots and transaction history which is more than enough to expose this Coinbase scandal. We have reported this fraud to countless government agencies and many users have contacted lawyers and a class action lawsuit has been filed against them.
We're a large social media group that won't give up until Coinbase pays us what they owe us!
If you would like any further details on this please contact me at (Redacted).
And please know that we have the power to bombard this page with hundreds of requests all at once!! But we prefer to be more diplomatic and give you 72 hours to respond before we use our brunt force to impose our will on you. Coinbase is controlling the news media but we control all social media and are going to force Wikipedia to include our story..
Thank you

Original definition
Long before the company, the definition of a coinbase transaction is the content of the coin generation transaction. https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Coinbase https://www.pcmag.com/encyclopedia/term/coinbase-transaction
Famously Satoshi put his newspaper headline in his genesis block transaction.
Should there be a link or something to the original definition? Wqwt (talk) 02:33, 6 January 2022 (UTC)
