I've adding to the paragraph describing the incompatibilities between this drive and the 1571. As can be seen here:

The FM/MFM control line on the 1770 (_DDEN) is hard wired to ground, making it impossible to select single density (FM) mode from software. Reading of FM disks is theoretically possible if this is changed (e.g. to a switch) and suitable software is used. —Preceding unsigned comment added by WikiPhu (talkcontribs) 13:07, 26 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This was deliberate. Although you are correct that the line can be changed to permit the use of single density discs, it would require the CP/M source code to be modified and re-assembled to include the formats of the single density modes that you wished to use. This is not quite as trivial as it sounds, and I speak from experience as I modified the CP/M source code (kindly supplied by Commodore UK as it doesn't come as standard with the 1571 or the C128) to read (and write) Televideo format CP/M discs as I had a substantial library of CP/M software in that format. All of it ran without modification. 109.156.49.202 (talk) 16:02, 26 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
